Specialising in American styles of barbecue and craft beers, DogHouse Merchant City is on Hutcheson Street in Glasgow city centre. With exposed brick walls, prominent piping and reclaimed wood, as well as judicious use of wooden pallets, it has a consciously rough-hewn feel. All the better to focus attention on the food and the wide range of BrewDog and guest beers. An outdoor seating area is popular on warmer days. A well stocked BottleDog shop looks after customers’ off sales requirements.

The first of three – and counting – Lebowskis bars, this original Argyle Street outlet opened in 2017. It could be argued that Lebowskis helped kick start the surrounding Finnieston area as one of Glasgow’s most fashionable neighbourhoods for eating and drinking. From the drinks menu to the bowling skittles, the quirky spirit of the film which inspired the bar is evident throughout. Expect a decor which is stripped back but comfortable. Outside seating and Lebowskis’ signature range of White Russian cocktails are among the attractions.

Red’s True BBQ is a barbecue restaurant in Manchester city centre with an industrial style decor of exposed bricks and pipework. With an aim to end “the plague of bad British barbecue” it takes its barbecued meat very seriously. Their meat is smoked fresh every day and may include ribs, pulled pork, sticky chicken or brisket. Red’s True is famous for its donut burger: two patties, melted cheese, smoked peppercorn bacon, crispy onions, and dirty sauce, all between two sweet glazed donuts

The Rum Shack is a Caribbean bar, canteen and venue on Pollokshaws Road in Glasgow’s Southside. With more than a hundred rums behind the bar and an endearingly rough-hewn, beach hut decor, it does exactly what it says on the tin. There is live music or DJs in the main bar most nights of the week and The Rum Shack’s dancehall venue hosts theatre, bands, comedy, club nights and artisan markets. An outside seating area is very popular when the sun comes out. More than the sum of its parts, The Rum Shack is something of a community hub in the Southside.

Launched at the tail end of 2017, Van Winkle is an American-style bar on the Gallowgate in Glasgow’s Calton neighbourhood. Bourbon, BBQ and burgers are the mainstays of the menus and, as you might expect, the decor also takes its cue from the US of A.

A taste of true Kentucky at Charing Cross After the success of its Barrowlands restaurant, Van Winkle Bourbon, BBQ & Grill is now offering up fresh Kentucky flavours and classic comfort food in the West End.
Inside, the stripped wooden tables and hanging bulbs will whisk you off to a land of bluegrass, moonshine and bourbon on the rocks. On sunnier days, you can soak up the vibe in the beer garden. Your pooch is very welcome too — in fact, there is even a special menu for dogs developed by Ross Allan from the BBC’s Pets‘n’Vets.
