The Rum Shack is a Caribbean bar, canteen and venue on Pollokshaws Road in Glasgow’s Southside. With more than a hundred rums behind the bar and an endearingly rough-hewn, beach hut decor, it does exactly what it says on the tin. There is live music or DJs in the main bar most nights of the week and The Rum Shack’s dancehall venue hosts theatre, bands, comedy, club nights and artisan markets. An outside seating area is very popular when the sun comes out. More than the sum of its parts, The Rum Shack is something of a community hub in the Southside.

The first of three – and counting – Lebowskis bars, this original Argyle Street outlet opened in 2017. It could be argued that Lebowskis helped kick start the surrounding Finnieston area as one of Glasgow’s most fashionable neighbourhoods for eating and drinking. From the drinks menu to the bowling skittles, the quirky spirit of the film which inspired the bar is evident throughout. Expect a decor which is stripped back but comfortable. Outside seating and Lebowskis’ signature range of White Russian cocktails are among the attractions.

Specialising in American styles of barbecue and craft beers, DogHouse Merchant City is on Hutcheson Street in Glasgow city centre. With exposed brick walls, prominent piping and reclaimed wood, as well as judicious use of wooden pallets, it has a consciously rough-hewn feel. All the better to focus attention on the food and the wide range of BrewDog and guest beers. An outdoor seating area is popular on warmer days.
