The Kelbourne Saint West End, Glasgow

British, European, Traditional

The Kelbourne Saint is on Queen Margaret Drive in Glasgow's West End. A former church hall, it was the location for the infamous Trainspotting scene where Begbie threw a pint pot into the crowd. These days, it is very much a family-friendly affair with a large beer garden which has its own kids' play area, deck chairs and heated huts. The giant beer tankard - filled with their own Apache Pilsner - is always a talking point. The midweek quiz

Blackfriars Merchant City, Glasgow

Gastro Pub

5 reviews

Since 1995, Blackfriars has been giving Merchant City real ale fans plenty to smile about. With twelve beer taps - five real ales, many Scottish - alongside some 40 bottled beers from all over the world, there is plenty of choice. It is not hard to see why Blackfriars has won CAMRA’s Glasgow Pub Of The Year twice. The basement venue hosts regular club nights with DJs and bands playing the hippest music from the 1950’s onwards. If many of Blackfriars neighbours are style bars, this is more of an honest to goodness pub.

    Tasty but expensive

I've been here many times and most of the time the food is great. On this occasion most of the dishes were delicious, though there were a few questionable aspects. The price of the set meal has gone up by £2, still with many supplements on the menu and some of the portion sizes have gotten smaller. That's the part that bothered me. The mussels were lovely, however I cannot see how a £1.50 supplement is necessary for mussels. The halloumi is always an amazing dish though is noticeably smaller than the previous 2 times I've ordered it. The sea bass was also perfectly cooked and full of flavour, though appears a rather small dish. The only let downs in terms of flavour with the food was the chicken and haggis main and the scallop starter from the a la carte. They were under seasoned and just not very exciting, especially the mashed potato. Nevertheless, I do love most of the flavours and although I think the deal is overpriced, the quality is good and I will go back.

    Looking forward to next visit

Loved the setup of the restaurant. Being able to sit outside as it was a hot sunny day was lovely and the food was great. We had ordered desserts but as we had tickets for the cinema we didn't have time to sit and enjoy them. The staff were very helpful and gave us our desserts to go and they were delicious. Overall a great experience and myself and a friend are returning for a comedy night next Friday, can't wait.
