The giant beer tankard - filled with their own Apache Pilsner - is always a talking point. The midweek quiz

Blackfriars Merchant City, Glasgow

Gastro Pub

5 reviews

Since 1995, Blackfriars has been giving Merchant City real ale fans plenty to smile about. With twelve beer taps - five real ales, many Scottish - alongside some 40 bottled beers from all over the world, there is plenty of choice. It is not hard to see why Blackfriars has won CAMRA’s Glasgow Pub Of The Year twice. The basement venue hosts regular club nights with DJs and bands playing the hippest music from the 1950’s onwards. If many of Blackfriars neighbours are style bars, this is more of an honest to goodness pub.

    Great Value Pre-Theatre

We had a great meal here last Friday evening. Chose the 3 course pre-theatre which was very substantial and very tasty! I can highly recommend the Haggis Bon Bon starter which came with turnip puree and a rich whisky sauce. The Catch of the Day main was a delicious selection of hake, prawns and mussels with a tomato sauce and creamy mash. My other half went for the tomato Bruschetta with black pudding followed by a large portion of chicken breast with Haggis fritter and sauce, which he was very impressed with. Already pretty full, he talked me into dessert, so we both had the apple and caramel tart served with ice cream, which was so lovely, he wants me to try and make it! Lovely selection of wines to complement the meal and we totally forgave them for initially having to wait for our cocktails as they had a huge Graduation party in at the same time who managed to get in first! Otherwise the service was prompt and very welcoming considering how busy they were. We will definitely be back!

    Lovely staff and decent food

The deal was good value for money and the staff were lovely but we were given dirty glasses and the floor and the table next to us were covered in food which is quite off putting.

    Good atmosphere and decent food

Good deal through 5pm and the meal was fine, although the choices were a little limited. Quite surprised that the main courses of pies, (with choice of mash or chips), did not have any accompanying vegetables.
