The Northern Quarter branch of Turtle Bay serves the Caribbean food known to fans of the restaurant group. With decor featuring bright murals, strings of multicoloured lightbulbs and plastic school chairs, diners may think they’d wandered into a Kingston beachside party. The menu is made up of starters inspired by beach shacks and street hawkers across the Caribbean islands, one pots which are slowly simmered and served with rice ‘n’ peas, and jerk dishes which are marinated with herbs and spices and grilled to order over Turtle Bay’s own pit grill. Over 40 rums are available from the bar, many of which are included in Turtle Bay’s inventive cocktail list.

The Rum Shack is a Caribbean bar, canteen and venue on Pollokshaws Road in Glasgow’s Southside. With more than a hundred rums behind the bar and an endearingly rough-hewn, beach hut decor, it does exactly what it says on the tin. There is live music or DJs in the main bar most nights of the week and The Rum Shack’s dancehall venue hosts theatre, bands, comedy, club nights and artisan markets. An outside seating area is very popular when the sun comes out. More than the sum of its parts, The Rum Shack is something of a community hub in the Southside.
