Based in Glasgow’s Merchant City on Candleriggs, Dhabba has brought north Indian cooking to the city centre. Along with sister restaurant Dakhin, which specialises in southern Indian food, Dhabba was one of the first Indian restaurants in Glasgow to concentrate on regional specialities rather than Anglo-Indian staples. The result is an award-winning restaurant whose sleek, modern looks match its innovative approach to Indian food.
Fresh, natural ingredients without any artificial colours or flavourings are just one reason why the northern Indian dishes of Dhabba have been such a hit in Glasgow. But perhaps the main reason for their popularity is that it offers something different from most of its city centre competitors. The restaurant speciality is the dum puhkt dishes in which the ingredients are sealed in the cooking vessel and almost steamed in their own juices. An example is the kundan qaliya: tender lamb pieces simmered in an exotic golden yellow sauce laced with saffron and garnished with a disc of egg yolk.
A wide selection of fish, lamb and poultry curries also keep the chefs busy but we must mention the great choice which the restaurant lays on for vegetarians. For home-style Punjabi cooking, try the black lentils and red kidney beans slow cooked in a creamy blend of garlic, tomato and butter. For customers used to more conventional Glasgow Indian menus, Dhabba’s helpful staff are happy to guide newbies through the options.
Dhabba’s location on Candleriggs in Merchant City is a brisk 10 minute walk from both Glasgow Central and Queen Street train stations, with St. Enoch and Buchanan Street Subway stations also within walking distance. There are bus stops close to the restaurant, and payable car parking available at the NCP car park on Albion Street a short distance away.
