We had a ladies lunch here and we all tried something new. The starters were delicious and fresh. The main courses were very tasty with just the right amount of spice. We all enjoyed the rice pudding for dessert too. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly,, we will definitely return here. I love 5pm.co.uk as you always find these hidden gems.

I am coeliac and I can’t explain how exciting it is to have the choice of everything on a menu! The food is so fresh, tasty and authentic and reasonable at that. Staff are lovely too.

Part of Glasgow’s vibrant Merchant City, Dakhin is a restaurant specialising in South Indian cooking rather than generic Indian dishes. The sister restaurant to the nearby Dhabba which serves northern Indian specialities, Dakhin is located on an airy first floor space, and has an open plan kitchen for guests to watch their choices come to life.
Dakhin was the first southern Indian restaurant, not just in Glasgow but the whole of Scotland, to dedicate itself to unique, regional specialities, which sets it apart from most of its peers.
As befits Glasgow’s first southern Indian restaurant, Dakhin specialises in dosas, which are thin rice and lentil pancakes, typical of the area. Cooked on a griddle, dosas come in various thicknesses and are filled with ingredients such as spicy minced lamb, chicken and Mysore masala – a mixture of potatoes, tomatoes, onions and green peas flavoured with spices, mustard seeds and curry leaves.
A variation on the theme are idli and wada, rice cakes and lentil doughnuts which come doused in pickles, chutneys and herbs. Slightly more familiar are Dakhin’s lamb, chicken, seafood and poultry curries, infused with the distinctive southern Indian flavours of coconut, black pepper and mustard seeds.
Vegetarians are particularly well catered for, with dishes such as their batata keerai soung, fried cubes of potatoes and shredded spinach cooked together in a southern Indian sweet and sour sauce. One of Glasgow’s most innovative Indian restaurants, Dakhin also caters for gluten free guests, as South Indian breads are more likely to be made from rice flour rather than wheat flour.
Located on Candleriggs in Merchant City, Dakhin is not far from both Argyle and High Street, both of which have rail stations nearby. Queen Street and Central rail stations are a short 10 minute walk away, and bus stops and taxi ranks are easily accessible from the restaurant, meaning diners are not short of options for travel home after an enjoyable meal in Dakhin.
