Chic Mediterranean restaurant in Merchant City

Located in the heart of Glasgow’s Merchant City on Albion Street, Arta is truly a sight to behold. The main bar will fill you with a sense of antique Mediterranean elegance and splendour, with its enormous standing candelabras and staircases worthy of a castle. The restaurant is a contemporary delight – long and low with an arched ceiling, Arta’s open plan dining is enjoyed in an atmosphere of well-heeled chic. Open Thursday to Saturday, Arta offers authentic tapas and sangria in attractive surroundings.

Spanish cuisine in a traditional setting

The restaurant caters for romantic meals for two as well as larger parties celebrating a special occasion, and if guests aren’t quite certain what tapas dishes to order from the menu then Arta’s friendly servers will help with recommendations.

Some tapas options in particular that are popular with diners are the seared scallops and black pudding with a Spanish brandy sauce (chamuscado vieiras); the red peppers stuffed with cream cheese, pine nuts & raisins (pimientos rojas); the breast of chicken wrapped in Serrano ham with thyme roasted potatoes; and, of course, the chorizo sausage with red onion & Rioja sauce. Regular customers also advise to leave room for Arta’s Valencian orange sponge dessert (bizcocho de naranja Valenciana) which is served with orange sorbet and a passion fruit syrup.

Close to High Street & Argyle Street train stations

Arta is on Albion Street in the Merchant City and a 5 minute walk from both High Street and Argyle Street train stations. Bus stops are also located nearby, with Buchanan Street and St. Enoch Subway stations each a brisk 10 minute walk from the restaurant. Paid parking can be found at the Q-Park car park on Albion Street, a few moments from Arta.

8 dishes that will make you want to dine in Arta

Walk through the door of Arta and you immediately feel like you’ve been transported from Glasgow’s Merchant City to a courtyard in Mallorca. The listed building, which was a cheese market in Medieval times, is a vast space of stone pillars, lush flowers arrangements, and sweeping staircases and balconies that look like they’ve been transported from a film set of Romeo and Juliet. When we visited on a Thursday it was salsa class night so there were couples twirling in the main bar as we dined. Marvellous.
