Visited during the fringe and the pub was VERY busy. Nonetheless, the food was good and service excellent. We had booked for 5pm but due to unforeseen circumstances we couldn't make it for then. Phoned the pub (at very short notice) and explained and they were very understanding and kept our table for 7pm even though it was very busy.
Food was good pub grub for a quick meal which was what we wanted. Not a restaurant to linger over a meal. Would definitely return next time I go to Edinburgh.

Popular with students and other local residents, the Green Mantle on West Crosscauseway is a quirky, modern bar housed in a traditional Edinburgh pub setting. Live music, sports and a very popular quiz night keep the Mantle buzzing. Located in the heart of the Southside, it is a much loved and evolving veteran of the local pub scene.
‘Good quality, local ingredients, simply prepared’ is the ethos in the kitchens at the Green Mantle. From chip butties to soup and roll combos, it is hearty, honest grub. Popular main courses include the Arbroath smoke fishcakes, the classic mac ‘n’ cheese and the ever changing hotpot of the day.
Pride of place goes to the range of burgers featuring buffalo from Fife’s Puddledub Farm. The Kilted Buffalo burger, topped with Macsween haggis, has many fans. Others prefer to keep it pure and go for the classic Buffalo Burger served with red onion marmalade. If the buffalo don’t float your boat, consider the Cod Father which is, of course, beer-battered cod goujons on a bap with the house tartare sauce.
The Green Mantle is on West Crosscauseway in Edinburgh’s Southside. It’s a five minute stroll from Edinburgh University’s George Square campus and the Festival Theatre. On-street parking is restricted. Several bus routes run to and from the city centre along the adjacent Clerk Street. Waverley train station and the tram line are a fifteen minute walk.
