On arrival, we were offered seats in the upper part of the restaurant and we were shown to our seats quickly. Having shown the 5pm voucher we then selected sea bass with tomatoes, capers and olives whilst I had rigatoni sicilia. Both meals were on the table within 15 mins. Hubby said that it was the best piece of fish he'd ever had! My pasta was al dente and looked like a smallish portion but was very filling. We opted for wine as an extra to our voucher entitlement then had coffees with our scrumptious tiramasu. The staff were very busy as the dining area was full. That didn't mean that they were any less friendly or efficient. What I did find strange was the quirky decor (pirate themed) which I certainly didn't expect. Very popular with families even at 7.30pm on a Saturday night! We would recommend this hidden gem even if it is about 10-15 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street.

My friends and I had a lovely meal here on the 5pm deal. Staff were friendly and helpful. Atmosphere was relaxing and food delicious.

Ciao Roma is a popular family run Italian located in Edinburgh’s Old Town. With a traditional and authentic décor including an open kitchen, Ciao Roma offers diners a warm Italian welcome and a relaxed dining experience.
Authentic, fresh and seasonal produce are high priorities on the menus at Ciao Roma which covers a mix of classic and contemporary Italian dishes. To start, there is a wide range of antipasti to choose from such as pollo in carrozza, pan fried, breaded chicken and mozzarella, served with a spicy tomato dipping sauce, or avocado gamberetti, fanned avocado with prawns and Marie Rose sauce.
Pasta is all produced in the restaurant’s kitchens, only adding to its authenticity, and a signature dish includes the tagliatelle fabio, tagliatelle with chicken, chorizo and broad beans in a cream and tomato sauce.
There is an extensive choice of pizza and risotto as well as meat and fish dishes. Ciao Roma’s polpette e friarielli pizza is worth a try, a Neapolitan specialty pizza which has tomato, buffalo mozzarella, meatballs and tenderstem broccoli on top.
From their desserts, it is worthwhile getting anything that includes their award winning ice cream; made on site, Martone Ice Cream has the true Italian ice cream taste.
For Italian wine lovers, you can’t get much more authentic than Ciao Roma’s wine which come from its own vineyards in southern Italy.
Ciao Roma is in a perfect location if you are in need of a meal after a day’s shopping on Princes Street or exploring Edinburgh’s sights. It is located on the South Bridge in the Old Town and is only a five minute walk from Waverley train station. There are ample taxi ranks and bus routes nearby.
