  Afternoon Tea

  I received a gift of afternoon tea for two including cocktails for my birthday. When we arrived we were taken through to the dining area and asked what hot drinks we would like. We were told that it would be 20mins to prepare our afternoon tea. We were asked if there were any dietary requirements before we got our order prepared.When it arrived it looked great hot scones, burgers, chicken wraps, smoothies, sponge cakes, chocolate mousse. The staff were very helpful, pleasant and asked us if there was anything else we required. All were delicious and we were completely full, we needed more tea to wash everything down. I decided to ask for our cocktails which we watched the Barman make up. We stayed the full 2 hours as you needed it to take your time eating. Once we had finished we went to leave and the Barman ran after us to say we hadn’t paid for our drinks! I had to get the voucher print out, out and said they were included in the offer. I was quite annoyed at this as the staff should know what offer we had. I was also embarrassed at being asked to pay for something which was given to me as a gift. At no time were we asked what cocktails we would like from the menu and if I hadn’t of asked for them I don’t think we would have got them. Overall I would highly recommend Chez Mal for their food and the cocktails were excellent.

  Chez Mal- one of my favourites

  Starters positively delicious- grilled mackerel great, chicken liver mousse exquisite. Difficulty in getting gluten free option for main course but our server Alijah went out of her way to ensure one which I liked. Salmon main was a little on the small side. Desserts were divine. Overall a lovely meal.

Modern British brasserie in Leith

Housed in the eye-catching Malmaison hotel on Tower Place, the Chez Mal restaurant enjoys spectacular views over the Port of Leith. Given a smart refurbishment in 2016, the dining room has a sleek, contemporary look and light, spacious feel. The new look bar is a hip hangout with craft beers and innovative cocktails while the waterfront terrace is always popular when the sun makes an appearance.

Seasonal menus and brasserie classics

The menus at Chez Mal restaurant change with the seasons and are neatly balanced between classic brasserie dishes and contemporary international choices. From the starters, this means that diners can choose from dishes such as the prawn cocktail and chicken liver parfait or crab tacos, Thai BBQ chicken lollipops and fritto misto.

Main courses might be a rack of herb-crusted West Country lamb or pasta with grilled tiger prawns, cherry tomatoes, chilli and crab bisque. A grill section offers lobster, Black angus steaks and the mighty Mal burger. Seafood fans will find much to enjoy. There is always a set menu and the set price Sunday brunch feast is an epic affair.

Malmaison hotel is at One Tower Place in Leith. It is around a fifteen minute walk from the Royal Yacht Britannia which is berthed adjacent to the shops and cinemas of Ocean Terminal. Taxi ranks and bus stops to Edinburgh city centre can be found on nearby Commercial Street. The hotel has some on-street parking.
