Established in 1456, The Golf Tavern is on Wright’s Houses in Bruntsfield, next to the Links and the venerable short-hole golf course from which its name ultimately derives. Sporting memorabilia and eclectic bric-a-brac cover the walls while the big screens deliver all the sports action. It is an atmospheric pub, especially on big match days, and has both a bunker-shaped main bar and comfortable upstairs dining area. Its attractions include quiz nights, live music at the weekends and, of course, club and ball hire for anyone who wants a round on the pitch and putt.
The Golf Tavern serves hearty, home-style, British pub food, all washed down by cask ales, wines and whisky. From fish ‘n’ chips and steak pies to the all day Scottish fry up plus mac ‘n’ cheese, all the classics are there alongside steaks and burgers. More contemporary options might be the nachos, the super food salad and the bourbon chicken wings. The Sunday roast is always popular and the staff recommend the sausage of the week from local butchers Crombies. Typical dessert choices would be the sticky toffee pudding or the poached rhubarb crumble.
The Golf Tavern is on Wright’s Houses by Bruntsfield Links. There is limited on-street parking. Haymarket train station is a brisk fifteen minute walk from the restaurant and there are several bus stops with services running to and from Edinburgh’s city centre. Local attractions include the King’s Theatre, Cameo Cinema and the Meadows.
