my bf and I found ourselves having a baby-free Tuesday, so decided to go out for dinner. had a quick look on 5pm and saw a deal for Shandon Belles for £8 for 2 courses. I had been before (and liked it - see previous review) so decided we couldn't really go wrong. Tbh, we weren't expecting that much, because, £8 for 2 courses...seems crazy. BUT, I couldn't actually believe how lovely our dining experience was from start to finish. Offered tap water as soon as we arrived, lovely, then ordered, was then served bread and butter (tbh - bread actually wasn't the nicest, didn’t taste the freshest, but I cannot complain about this). For starters, I ordered mozzarella with a chilli sauce and my bf ordered pate. Both portions were really big, the mozzarella was smoked, and omg - delicious - 10/10, the chilli sauce it came with was quite mild and complimented it beautifully. My bf ordered the chicken liver pate. It was served as two quite 70's looking piped portions, but again, delicious, and a very generous serving. Pate came with a slice of toast and both had a nice side salad with pesto.
Mains - I had steak pie and chips. Steak pie came in a ramekin, nice pieces of well-cooked steak with a thick gravy and shallots, and chips. Steak pie was lovely - not fine dining, obviously, but good tasty hearty food. My bf had the chicken schnitzel. He did enjoy this, it came with spaghetti and a tomato sauce. It wasn't spicy like an arrabbiata, just a tomato sauce. He felt the pasta was a bit watery which meant the chicken became a bit soggy, and also felt the chicken was a bit thick, he prefers his schnitzel thinner. HOWEVER this isn't a complaint either.
Service – FANTASTIC. My wine, and our water was topped up regularly, and our server was lovely and professional.
I had a half bottle of wine and my bf had 2 bottles of Innis & Gunn, bill all in was £32.00. The wine was £6 and the beer was £5 a bottle.
