The main Christmas market in Budapest is located in the Vörösmarty Square, right in the heart of the city centre.
Note that Christmas markets will run approximately 9th November until 26th December, though these dates may be subject to change.
More than a hundred stalls offer local handicrafts and unique stocking fillers. Look out for woven goodies, candles and Christmas decorations while sampling the traditional kürtoskalács (sweet Hungarian pastries), roast chestnuts, mulled wine, freshly baked bread and strudel maker stalls.
Every day, there are concerts in front of the Gerbeaudcafé with performances from brass brands, string orchestras, choirs and children’s choirs all adding to the festive atmosphere.
The main event at the market in Vörösmarty Square is the opening of the advent calendar. Opened every day at 5pm on advent days, the calendar reveals contemporary works of art in the windows of Gerbeaud House amidst a spectacular fanfare and twinkling light show.
Not a fan of Christmas? Never fear – there is plenty to do outwith this time. Your hotel is located in an ideal place for all sorts of fun.
A four star hotel, City Inn is near to public transport links and makes an ideal base for exploring this atmospheric city. The nearest metro stop (Corvin-negyed) and the capital’s busiest tram (4, 6) are 200 meters away.
Rooms have an LCD TV, free internet access, hair dryer, safe and minibar.
As well as a 24 hour lobby bar, the hotel has a wellness centre with Finnish and infra-red saunas.
City Inn has picked up plenty of positive feedback from guests on TripAdvisor, including the following recent reviews, edited for length:
‘I stayed here for three nights and was very pleasantly surprised how nice the hotel was and how helpful the staff were… The room, although not over large, was comfortable, clean and absolutely fine for what I needed… Staff were very nice and helpful at all times. The hotel is… not far from the bustling restaurants and shopping mall. Breakfast was very good… Overall a pleasant stay which I will repeat on my next visit to Budapest.’
‘The breakfast was lovely, plenty of choices for fresh food and desserts. The WiFi was a bit slow but it’s fine if we just need to search for travel information or Facebook. The hotel is very well located, close to a big shopping mall and with easy access to metro and other public transport.’
‘The location for shopping, transport, bars and restaurants is really good. The room we were allocated was clean when we arrived and cleaned whenever we left the instruction on the door to do so… The reception staff were… very helpful and patient for the first couple of days before we got used to the, frankly brilliant, metro system. Breakfast was really good… All in all I really enjoyed staying here and the staff were a credit to the hotel. I would certainly stay there again.’
