Berlin is one of the world’s most exciting capitals.
Post-reunification Berlin is a vibrant, cultural metropolis that combines the grandeur of a capital city with one of Europe’s most dynamic counter-culture scenes.
It has atmospheric neighbourhoods; hip bohemian shops and bars, and an artistic heritage that stretches from Marlene Dietrich to Cabaret to Bowie.
Today’s Big Deal offers you the opportunity to experience everything this evocative city has to offer (or at least as much as you can pack into a three night break).
Plus if you are a fan of planning ahead, you could even combine your trip with Berlin’s magical Christmas markets in November and December.
The Big Deal offers return flights to Berlin from Glasgow International or Edinburgh International, with luggage allowance, and three nights room only accommodation in the 3* Best Western Hotel am Spittelmarkt.

Comfy and conveniently located hotel
Centrally located close to Spittelmarkt Underground Station, the Best Western Hotel am Spittelmarkt offers convenient access to Berlin’s main attractions.
Set in a peaceful side street in the heart of the city, it is just a short walk from the famous Friedrichstrasse culture and shopping street. The UNESCO Museum Island is a 15-minute walk away and other visitor highlights, such as the Exhibition Centre, Branderburg Gate, Gendarmenmarkt Square and Potsdamer Platz, can also be easily reached.
Each of the hotel’s modern, classically furnished rooms is ensuite with free WiFi and a flat-screen TV.
The hotel offers a large buffet breakfast each morning and also has a 24-hour bar.
Berlin has plenty of attractions to suit all tastes. Sir Norman Foster’s ultramodern Reichstag design and the Brandenburg Gate are obvious architectural highlights, although the old Eastern quarters of the city also exert a fascinating appeal.
Bowie fans may want to make a pilgrimage to the Hansa studios on Potsdamer Platz in Kreuzberg, location for the singer’s iconic Berlin recordings.
Nearby, the grungy S036 club retains its authentic 80s atmosphere and still stages live music.
The city has countless art venues and small galleries, with a cosmopolitan feel. In particular, the hipster neighbourhood of Neukölln is a great area to explore, with its cool bars, shops and clubs.
Experience the Christmas markets
The festive season kicks off in the German capital in late November (best to enquire about dates when booking). The hub of Berlin’s festive celebrations is Winter World on Potsdamer Platz.
Toboggan rides and a 500-square-metre ice rink attract the crowds, and there is no shortage of refreshments. Stalls sell traditional German and Austrian Christmas snacks, like roast sugared almonds, toffee apples and gluhwein (mulled wine).
Every neighbourhood in the city seems to have its own market and funfair as Berliners embrace the festive spirit. So get ready to lose yourself in a winter wonderland (and do a bit of a shop while you’re at it)…
Best Western Hotel am Spittelmarkt has picked up positive TripAdvisor reviews, including these recent ones:
‘Good choice for Berlin. We had three nights in this hotel and appreciated all it had to offer. Staff were very helpful, and spoke very good English. Bicycles were available to rent – and the staff were happy to order a taxi (that came in two minutes). Good location – close to a U-Bahn station, the canal and river (which made for good walks), several sights and a number of good restaurants. Our room was clean, functional and very quiet. The breakfast was extra but good. We enjoyed our stay!’
‘Really high quality budget hotel. This is a fantastic hotel. Foyer is small but functional and they even designed a bar. There are 2 lifts which is great so you are not hanging around waiting ages. Rooms are amazing. Really clean. My room had a bath & shower. Staff were also very helpful. WiFi great too as worked here for a couple of hours. Nice quiet area with great restaurant opposite. I did not eat in the hotel. Really great hotel with fantastic value.’
‘Clean, modern and central located hotel. Very friendly staff, reasonable prices, clean and for its super location, very roomy. The breakfast buffet blew our mind. Compared to all Best Westerns we visited in the US, it was outstanding. We will come back to this location!’
For fans of espionage thrillers, Bowie’s Berlin trilogy, cool neighbourhoods or spectacular modern architecture, a Berlin city break is the perfect escape.
With direct flights and conveniently located accommodation, today’s Big Deal puts you right in the heart of this energetic city.
Plus if you are one of those super-organised types, you could even plan your trip to coincide with the fabulous Christmas markets.
