Since it’s Halloween soon, did you ever hear the spooky story of the Eagle Stone in Strathpeffer?
In the 1600s, a famous seer said that if the stone fell down three times, then Loch Ussie would flood the valley below. So far, it has fallen down twice.
Thankfully, the locals have taken the very smart step of setting it in concrete, so hopefully it’s not going anywhere.
See the mysterious relic for yourself – plus lovely mountain scenery and the roaring Rogie Falls – with today’s Big Deal on a Highland escape to the historic Ben Wyvis Hotel.
Charming woodland hotel
The Ben Wyvis Hotel is a grand but inviting Victorian mansion house surrounded by picturesque woodland and impressive grounds.
Located in Strathpeffer and handy for Inverness, the hotel makes a great base for exploring the lochs, castles and glens of the region, or for exploring the whisky trail.

This Big Deal would be perfect for an autumn or winter jaunt, as it is available until the 22nd December 2019.
Option one is for an overnight stay for two in a classic double or twin room with a full Scottish breakfast, glass of fizz on arrival, three course dinner with coffee and a relaxing late check-out at noon. Dinner will be from the chef’s daily menu.
Option two adds on an extra night, with dining on the first night.
Guest rooms at Ben Wyvis are elegantly decorated in rich, warm colours.
All have ensuite bathrooms with complimentary toiletries, as well as a TV and a welcome tray with shortbread. Some also have mountain views.
Once you’ve sipped your arrival fizz, you can head down to the Jacobite Restaurant for your three course meal with coffee.
With its high ceilings, chandeliers and large picture windows, you’ll definitely be dining in style. There is also the bonus of a big Victorian fireplace, ideal for cosy autumn and winter dining.
Typical mouthwatering mains from the chef’s daily menu include slow-roasted blade of beef, poached fillet of salmon, and linguine with sun-dried tomato & pesto cream.
Plenty to see and do
If you’re an active type then there are plenty of great hiking and biking spots nearby, including Rogie Falls.
Strathpeffer itself is a fascinating village with a history as a Victorian spa resort. The Pavilion is still a major cultural venue with a regular music programme and the Museum of Childhood showcases toys through the centuries.
Other nearby attractions include the Glen Ord Distillery, famed for its unique Singleton malt.
