Restaurant with local produce
The restaurant has a reputation as one of the finest in the north of Scotland and is the only one in Caithness with two AA Rosettes.
Chefs at the restaurant are fortunate to have the bounty of local produce to use in their dishes from neighbouring estates and the sea, and their menus are based around the freshest ingredients available at the time of year.
The menus at the hotel change with the seasons, but dishes may include: Mey selection of beef fillet served with confit celeriac, Scottish chanterelles and black truffle jus; oven roasted partridge served with potato rosti, wilted kale, toasted pine nuts, and game jus; and twice cooked blue cheese souffle served with red wine poached pears and a walnut dressing.
The dessert section of the menu includes creative dishes like pistachio cake with cassis sorbet, and hot chocolate chip souffle with vanilla bean ice cream.
Dramatic, unspoiled scenery
Located on the tip of the north coast of Scotland, at the edge of Europe, Caithness offers one of the most dramatic, unspoiled scenery in the UK (if not the world).
Forss House is situated on the famous North Coast 500, a road trip which follows the spectacular coastal scenery of the north of Scotland, and would be the perfect place for a pit stop during your drive.
The surrounding landscape of Caithness offers a wealth of crumbling castles and traditional crofting cottages to explore. Guests also have the option of getting the boat to the Orkney Isles. Outdoor activities in the area include walking, cycling, surfing, horse riding, golf, and salmon fishing. If you’re very lucky, you may even see the Northern Lights.
Forss House Hotel has welcomed many many happy guests. The hotel has an average rating of 4.5 stars out of five from 369 reviews on TripAdvisor.
“One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at. The staff are more family than staff. The food is of the highest quality – especially when considering this small hotel is at the northern tip of the British Isles! I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Northern Scotland – you can drive from one side to the other in a couple of hours, so no need to stay anywhere else :-) The whiskey bar is an unexpected delight – as is the very knowledgeable lady who will chat with you and figure out which whiskey is most likely to suit!”
“The room was in the fishing lodge and was lovely, perfect for us and the dog. The hotel is a beautiful old house, full of charm. The restaurant is AA rated and the food is of very good quality and there is a handy bar area too. We loved the outside space. Beautiful grounds, well marked walks, the waterfall and the river. All superb. Breakfast was included and it was excellent. Good range and choice. Staff were there when you needed them and were very friendly. Will definitely return.”
