What’s on your list of essentials for a perfect Highland hotel stay? Restaurant serving excellent Scottish cuisine? Cosy bar with an open fire? Gorgeous loch views?
We bet that a gin distillery isn’t on your list. But now that we’ve put the idea into your head, it would be a nice little extra, wouldn’t it?
Loch Leven Hotel is an award-winning, quirky little haven in the heart of the Highlands that has its very own gin distillery (as well as the other listed items). Today’s Big Deal for a mini-break for two will let you toast the blissful loch scenery with a craft G&T in hand.
Plus, to make you feel extra pampered, you’ll also get Prosecco and chocolates on arrival.
Unique and scenic hotel
Nestled at the foot of mighty Glencoe, this historic ferry inn in Onich dates back to the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie and looks out over the point where Loch Leven meets Loch Linnhe.
It is a now a family-run hotel with plenty to offer, including dramatic views over the gardens, lochs and mountains; a loch view restaurant, renowned bar, sun deck and even a literature lounge.
As mentioned, Loch Leven Hotel has now opened a craft gin distillery in the grounds, creating its own brand of Highland spiced gin, Devil’s Staircase.
And winter sports fans take note — you will be situated between two ski resorts.
One, two or three night stay
If all this sounds tempting, then today’s Big Deal offers a one, two or three night stay for two in a classic twin or double room with breakfast included.
This will include a glass of Prosecco each and chocolates on arrival, plus a late check-out of 1pm.
Options two and three also include a £20 dinner spend each on the first evening.
This offer is until the end of February 2020.
There will be a supplement of £20 per room, per night for Friday and Saturday stays. Children and dogs can also stay for a supplement.
Individually decorated rooms
Each of the hotel’s twelve en-suite guest rooms is decorated in a contemporary Scottish style with splashes of tartan and thistle motifs.
Features include a flat screen TV, free WiFi, complimentary toiletries, fluffy towels, tea & coffee making facilities, phone and hairdryer.
As an added perk, every room includes a book by Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith.
You can upgrade to a loch view room for £15 per room, per night.
Loch View Restaurant
The stylish Loch View Restaurant has panoramic views over Loch Leven and serves the best local seasonal produce, carefully prepared and executed with flair.
Dishes on the menu might include local seafood such as scallops or langoustines, as well as local meats and game such as Argyll lamb or estate venison.
If you have room for dessert, then TripAdvisor reviewers also rave about the sticky toffee pudding. Like really, really rave about it.
One of the best bars in Scotland
Awarded a ‘Best Bar’ title in the prestigious Scottish Hotel Awards for three years running, the hotel’s Old Ferry Bar serves over 60 malt whiskies, over 50 gins and a wide selection of draught beers, bottled beers and local craft ales, as well as a carefully selected cocktail list.
You can sample the tipple in front of the cosy open fire while soaking up the atmosphere.
If you’d rather pull on a woolly jumper and relax outdoors, the sundeck is a popular spot for an aperitif while watching the yachts sail by and the herons dip into the water.
Welcoming book nook
Or you could just cosy up in the Scottish Literature Lounge after dinner instead, which as well as having a selection of good reads, also includes a chessboard, solitaire and a range of other games.
Books and craft gin? Sounds like pure bliss to us.
Gad around Glencoe
With its soaring peaks, rugged glens and deep sea lochs, the Glencoe and Lochaber area offers fantastic opportunities for walking, climbing, mountain biking, golfing, water activities and wildlife safaris.
History buffs will enjoy visiting castles like Old Inverlochy while whisky lovers could drop by Ben Nevis Distillery for a dram.
Plus as the hotel is halfway between the Glencoe Mountain Resort and the Nevis Range, it is well placed for skiing.
TripAdvisor users have given Loch Leven Hotel a strong overall score of 4.5/5. Here are some recent reviews, edited for length:
‘So much character and comfort…we loved this hotel. Very homey, comfortable and loaded with character. The views from our windows were breathtaking. There is a little bar with some comfortable seating and a happy little fireplace creating a great atmosphere. We ate dinner at the hotel dining room, the food was excellent and plentiful…it was decided that the Sticky Toffee Pudding at Loch Leven Hotel was the absolute best we had.’
‘Wonderful weekend away. Stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is lovely with an excellent location for exploring the surrounding area (Glencoe, Fort William, Ben Nevis etc). We stayed in Room 1 which was clean and very spacious. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. The food was great. The views over the loch at breakfast were stunning. The staff are all lovely and very helpful…we would definitely return to this hotel.’
