Despite being refined sorts in the 5pm Big Deal office, it has come as a shock to discover that raising your pinkie when drinking tea is just not the done thing. According to the Social & Etiquette Expert on TV show Ladette to Lady, Liz Brewer, we are guilty of a terrible breach of manners.
‘I’m afraid the ‘pinkie’ may have returned in some circles due to the increase in tea drinking but it is in fact incorrect,’ she says. ‘Raising a pinkie is totally unacceptable, and unkindly – it is considered a pretence to good manners indicating the owner doesn’t have any.’
Golly. That’s us told.
You can practice your tea drinking etiquette at East Kilbride’s lovely Macdonald Crutherland House hotel. Set in 37 acres of peaceful wood and parkland, the Macdonald Crutherland House was built in 1705 as a dower house for Lady Dowager of Torrance Castle. Now a plush hotel, the house is a comfortable spot for a nice civilised afternoon tea.
The Big Deal Afternoon Tea at Macdonald Crutherland House includes scones served with preserves and clotted cream; sandwiches; afternoon pastries, fruit cake and a choice of fine teas. The cost of such an elegant little treat is £16 for two people which, as we may have mentioned, is half the standard price of £32.20.
Whether you choose to extend your pinkie or not, that’s a Big Deal which is not to be sniffed at.
