Back in the day, when place names were still being assigned, Argyll was originally going to be called The Most Beautiful Place on Earth.
All that stopped it from happening was the natural modesty of the locals who settled for the less showy Argyll instead.
See what all the fuss was about with today’s Big Deal at the romantic Royal an Lochan Hotel in Tighnabruaich.
This cracking Big Deal is for two people to enjoy an overnight dinner bed and breakfast stay, Sunday to Thursday, in a stunning Sea View room. Also included is tea, coffee and cake served in the afternoon, plus 2 courses per guest from the A la Carte menu in the hotel restaurant.
Option 2 is for two people to enjoy a two night DB&B stay at the hotel in a Sea View room with afternoon tea, coffee and cake on the day of arrival plus 2 courses from the A la Carte menu on both evenings of your stay. The option to stay for 2 nights is available seven days a week.
Situated in the serene heart of Argyll and Bute, the Royal an Lochan offers the lapping of the waves, stunning scenery, open fires, excellent cuisine, good wines and malts, and unrivalled service. All eleven of the luxurious, individually decorated bedrooms are ensuite
Locally sourced Scottish produce, such as Tarbert-landed langoustines, form the backbone of the regularly changing menus at the Royal an Lochan. Both Big Deal options include a two course dinner (starter and main course) from the a la carte menu. The two night option includes dinner for two on both nights.
Typical dishes include starters such as the locally smoked salmon pate with a sweet beetroot and balsamic puree or the smoked haddock and brie tartlet.
Popular main courses include the lemon sole wrapped in Ayrshire smoked bacon and filled with roasted red pepper and spring onion. Alternatively, try the salt and pepper duck breast with turmeric crushed potatoes and honey glazed carrots finished with an orange, red onion and balsamic jam.
Just as delicious are the views of the Kyles of Bute which can be seen from the dining areas.
The tranquil Argyll countryside surrounding the hotel offers some off the best scenery on the West Coast of Scotland. The hills above Tighnabruaich boast three well stocked trout lochs and, if you are feeling energetic, the nine-hole golf course nearby has possibly the best views in the world.
