According to The Spice Girls’ 1997 hit, spicing up your life could be achieved by slamming to the left and then shaking it to the right.
Fourteen years later and the 5pm team are still frankly baffled as to what on earth they were squawking on about.
Today’s Big Deal with Glasgow’s Southern Spice offers a much more straightforward method of spicing up your life: buy a voucher for £9.95 and the Sauchiehall Street restaurant will swap it for three courses of delicious Indian food.
As the name suggests, Southern Spice specialises in dishes from the south of India. Of course, they also sell the more familiar pakora and chicken kormas but if you fancy a taste of something different then step this way.
Typical southern Indian starters on the menu include medu vada: deep fried savoury doughnuts flavoured with onion, green chilli and pepper.
Alternatively, idli are steamed rice cakes made with zero oil and which come with different mouth-watering dips.
Typical main courses include dosa, a South Indian pancake made with fermented ground rice and urid dal, served with chutney and sambar and filled with stuffings such as potato masala, spicy chicken and lamb.
Possibly more familiar is the south Indian garlic chilli chicken prepared with chicken breast and a selection of South Indian spices which are simmered with lemon juice, tomatoes, stir fried onions and garnished with garlic.
All main courses are served with a choice of plain naan or boiled or jeera pilau rice. King prawn dishes are excluded from the offer.
Southern Spice is a relatively new arrival on Sauchiehall Street’s restaurant scene but it is already winning 5pm fans:
This is what Mehan Johnston had to say recently:
‘Great, little, family-run south Indian restaurant near the Dental Hospital on Sauchiehall Street. They do some excellent Goan dishes and everything tastes fresh. Recommended to a few friends and they all enjoyed food.’
Zigah-zigah? You’re having a laugh. If you want to spice up your life then today’s Big Deal is:
£9.95 per person for a three course meal from Southern Spice; a 60% saving on the standard £25
