Van Winkle is an American-style bar on the Gallowgate in Glasgow’s Calton neighbourhood. Bourbon, BBQ and burgers are the mainstays of the menus and, as you might expect, the decor also takes its cue from the US of A.

Artfully stressed corrugated tin, stripped wood tables and brick walls all give the feeling that you might just have stepped into a honky tonk in the Kentucky backwoods. A big screen shows the major sporting events while Americana bands provide the entertainment on Thursday evenings. The small beer garden comes into its own during the warmer months.

“I’m particularly fussy about Mac n cheese but this more than met my expectations. It was just how I loved it, as was the rest of the food. Best pulled pork I’ve ever tasted. The coleslaw was very homemade tasting, the fries were perfect and the onion rings were gorgeous. The batter was so light and crispy. I was starting to get full but wanted to keep eating as it was all so tasty! This meal was amazing value for money because of the standard of the food and the portion sizes. The restaurant itself has a lovely relaxed vibe about it and so well decorated. Service was top notch too. This restaurant is a fantastic addition to this area and I’m sure it will go from strength to strength. It certainly deserves to. I live local to it but after sampling the food here, if I didn’t, I’d certainly make the journey to it.”
