The fourth season of Downton Abbey starts in September.
If you can’t wait that long for another taste of the aristocratic highlife then book into Ballathie Country House Hotel with today’s Big Deal.
Built in the 1880s, Ballathie is a beautiful, privately owned, country house hotel which has a tranquil setting on the banks of the river Tay in Perthshire.
Rather like Downton Abbey, Ballathie House has had its fair share of distinguished visitors. In the Edwardian period, it hosted both the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Westminster.
These days, you don’t need blue blood to enjoy its luxurious comforts and peaceful surrounds.
This lovely Big Deal is for an overnight stay in a fantastic bedroom for two people in the award-winning Ballathie Country House Hotel. A full Scottish breakfast in the morning will prepare you for a fun day exploring the Perthshire countryside.
Option one is for stays taking place on Sunday to Thursday nights while option two is for Friday or Saturday night stays.
Upgrades to a master bedroom may be available at £50 per room per night and suites for a supplement of £70 per room per night.
Recently refurbished, the bedrooms at Ballathie are rather spectacular. Each bedroom’s period features are matched by sensitively introduced modern touches: trouser press, hairdryer, telephone, freeview television, WiFi, tea and coffee.
Of course, each room has an outstanding bathroom enhanced by the softest bathrobes and deluxe toiletries.
2 AA Rosettes
A sumptuous cooked Scottish breakfast is included in the offer.
The fine dining restaurant has been awarded 2 AA rosettes for its thoughtful use of the finest seasonal ingredients that Scotland’s larder can provide.
The menus change on a daily basis but a typical starter at dinner might be the roast quail and foie gras ballotine with forestière potatoes and soy jus or the beetroot-cured Orkney salmon with vanilla crème fraiche, orange jelly and caviar.
Examples of main course dishes include the char grilled sirloin of Scotch beef with fried rooster potatoes, estate chanterelles, pearl onions and garlic butter looks a tempting choice.
See and do
From walks to distillery visits, Perthshire has plenty to offer the visitor. The hotel can also organise fishing, shooting or golfing trips.
A little over an hour’s drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh, Ballathie Country House Hotel is popular with people looking for a luxurious country break that’s not too far away.
Among previous visitors was Pete Irvine, author of the Scotland the Best guide books. This is his verdict:
_‘A true country house hotel on the Tay that you fall in love with… probably the best place to stay near Perth… Good dining, great fishing,
good for a weekend away.’_

‘Peaceful with excellent attention to detail. One cannot go wrong with Ballathie House Hotel. It is looked after, in exquisite detail, by Jody Marshall. The staff members are friendly and personable, and the cuisine is perfect. After five days, we felt as though we were leaving old friends. We had a suite in the Riverside building – marvellous and luxurious. One can walk on the grounds, quite literally for miles. If in Perthshire, I recommend Ballathie House.’
