Today’s Big Deal is at the Deeside Inn in the charming village of Ballater. It sits in picturesque Royal Deeside in the Grampian Highlands, a favourite holiday destination for the royal family.
We can’t promise that you will be rubbing shoulders with Charles at the bar or swapping gossip with Kate over a pre-prandial sherry but there is a royal connection.
The Deeside Inn was refurbished and then re-opened in April of this year, it is over a hundred years old and it retains a wooden loo which is said to have been used by Queen Victoria.
Of course, the royal throne is just a tiny part of the Deeside Inn’s attractions. The original wooden panelling and beams have also been retained and they sit happily alongside the modern interiors of the revamp.
All of the rooms offer full en-suite facilities, flat screen TVs, tea and coffee making facilities plus, of course, shortbread.
The public areas are warm, cosy and welcoming. There is often a real fire burning in the lounge and the new Ceilidh Bar is a lively spot for a glass of wine or a dram from their extensive collection of single malts.
All stripped wooden flooring and local slate place mats, the restaurant offers a large selection of fish, grill and game with some local classics thrown in for good measure.
The chefs recommend the Deeside Steak Burger with sides of mushroom, cherry vine tomatoes and chunky chips.
With the Cairngorms on the doorstep there is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to enjoy. From fishing to mountain biking via walking and golf, it is all there.
Less energetic options include distillery visits; castle sight-seeing and assorted Highland Games.
Recent visitors have enjoyed their stay at The Deeside Inn. This is what Jaqui72 wrote on Trip advisor after a visit in April:
‘Very warm and friendly hotel. My husband and I enjoyed a great night at the Deeside Hotel. Great food and service.’
