All of today’s whiz bang gadgetry is great but sometimes, rather than trying to peer into the future on an iPad, we all want to go somewhere with an interesting past.
With a history that stretches back to the 19th century, today’s Big Deal with the Oban Caledonian Hotel fits the bill like a hand in a gauntlet.
Completed with the arrival of the West Highland Railway in Oban in 1882, the Oban Caledonian Hotel was requisitioned by the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Oban was a major base for trans-Atlantic convoys in those days and was also the home of the Flying Boats. The chat in the hotel bar must have been wild.
Oban’s landmark building, the luxury hotel rises from the water’s edge, and has many rooms boasting fine views over Oban Bay to the mountains of Mull and Ardgour. To help you enjoy the views, there will be a bottle of wine waiting in your room on arrival as part of the Big Deal.
The deal is for an overnight stay for two people in a standard double or twin room. Most standard rooms have a view to McCaig’s Folly or the Soroba Hills; some are more compact but have an Ocean View. Two disabled rooms are also available.
The Oban Caledonian has two dining options: Cafe Caledonian and The Restaurant Caledonian. Carefully restored with chandeliers and ornate plasterwork, the Restaurant is a Victorian dining room showcasing the best of Scotland’s larder. A fusion of modern and traditional Scottish and international cuisine, all of their dishes are freshly cooked using care and imagination. A three course dinner for two is included in the Big Deal as well as a full Scottish breakfast.
Oban is perhaps best known as the gateway to Argyll and The Isles. No less than ten islands are within easy reach for a day trip while other major attractions include the Glorious Gardens of Argyll – many of which, such as Arduaine and Crarae, are world famous.
Vouchers for this Big Deal are valid until the end of March 2012 which means they would make cracking gifts for anyone keen to explore all that Argyll and the Isles has to offer.
Alternatively, stick them in your own stocking and have a getaway to look forward to in the New Year.
