In 1865, long before the Pet Shop Boys, American newspaper man Horace Greeley advised his readers to ‘Go West!’ and start a new life in what is now California.
Nearly 150 years later, The Big Deal is also advising its readers to go west and, while starting a new life might be pushing it, we advise you to have a relaxing break at the Loch Melfort Hotel which sits in one of the most beautiful spots on Scotland’s West Coast.
Located on the Argyll coast, south of Oban, the Loch Melfort Hotel is a family-run country house which offers 25 individually styled bedrooms.
Cosy and comfortable, each room has magnificent sea views over Asknish Bay towards Jura, Shuna and Scarba.
As well as boasting tremendous vistas, the hotel’s Asknish Bay Restaurant has a great rep for fantastic food. There is a daily changing 4 course table’d hote menu or a varied à la carte menu with lighter options. All dietary needs can be catered for, so just ask when booking.
The restaurant has held two AA Rosettes since the year 2000 which is understandable when you see the menus featuring goodies such as freshly caught langoustines, lobster and crab; Islay scallops, select cuts of meat from Barbreck Farm in Ardfern and, when in season, game from the surrounding hills.
The countryside around the hotel is ideal for hiking or, for a less strenuous amble, the NTS-run Arduaine Gardens are just next door.
Ideal for a romantic winter break or simply a great excuse to escape the frantic run-up to Christmas, today’s Big Deal is for two people to enjoy an overnight stay with a continental breakfast at the Loch Melfort Hotel. A £20 discount voucher on dinner is also part of the deal.
The Loch Melfort hotel is a hit on TripAdvisor with a score of 4.5/5. This is how thasinallright reviewed a recent stay:
‘Had a lovely overnight stay at the Melfort. As others have said, the welcome was very warm and we were shown around the hotel and to our room by the receptionist who made us feel so at ease. Our room was in the Cedar block and we were able to sit on the balcony watching the sunset, completely at peace. The meal in the restaurant was extremely good.’
