The golfer Lee Trevino once remarked that his swing was so bad that he looked like ‘a caveman killing his lunch’.
Today’s Big Deal won’t necessarily make anybody’s swing more elegant but The Roxburghe Championship Golf Course is a beautiful setting in which to try and get your swing out of the Jurassic era.
The course was dreamt up by The Duke of Roxburghe who is a keen golfer. He commissioned Dave Thomas, the designer of The Belfry and San Roque courses, to come up with a challenging course on his Roxburghe Estate.
Opened in 1997, the result was this picturesque, par 72 course in the Scottish Borders.
The 7111 yard course features Thomas’ distinct hallmark of deep bunkers and large rolling greens. The wide fairways of the course follow the natural contours of the landscape and make full use of the many changes in levels.
The signature hole is Viaduct, an elevated tee commanding superb views over the River Teviot that hugs the left of the fairway with an imposing viaduct running across the horizon.
As well as eighteen holes on the course, the Big Deal also includes a basket of practice balls and discounts on buggy hire.
The course has attracted some star players who were bowled over by its beauty.
Sam Torrance said ‘Roxburghe’s signature hole, The Viaduct, is my favourite 14th tee in Scotland! It’s such a beautiful hole in such a glorious setting’.
When Colin Montgomerie opened the course with Nick Faldo, he commented: ‘I was impressed with the design and the quality of The Roxburghe. The Greens were immaculate and the course picturesque, a pleasure to play for professional and amateur alike.’
The course record is held by Sergio Garcia who got around in 66. If you would like to have a crack at Senor Garcia’s score then today’s Big Deal is:
£69 for two people to play eighteen holes at The Roxburghe Championship Golf Course plus a basket of practice balls and buggy discounts; a 50% discount on the standard £140
