They say that a man’s house is his castle. Fair enough but mine seems to be missing its moat, portcullis and ramparts, not to mention any sign of either Prince Charming or indeed Cinderella.
Today’s Big Deal on a relaxing overnight stay at the Barony Castle near Peebles offers the opportunity to experience the real thing.
16th century towerhouse
Now a member of the De Vere Venues group, Barony Castle was originally a 16th century towerhouse built by the Murrays of Blackbarony.
Sitting pretty in 25 acres of lush gardens, the grand exterior still looks like a fairytale castle but the Barony has been considerably altered since then. Not least in the introduction of all the modern comforts which you would expect to find in a 21st century hotel.
There is free high speed Internet in all of the hotel’s 78 ensuite rooms along with satellite TV and a hot drinks tray.
This Big Deal is for two people to enjoy a one night stay (£20 supplement per room Fri/Sat nights) in one of the hotel’s standard double or twin rooms. A full Scottish breakfast is served in the morning but you will also enjoy a lavish cream tea.
If you chose to take dinner in the hotel’s restaurant then not only will you benefit from a 20% discount on the food but the hotel will also give you a complimentary bottle of house wine per couple to accompany your meal.
Guests can use the hotel’s facilities which include an indoor pool, mini-gym, spa bath and sauna. Mountain biking fans will know the fantastic Glentress woodland trails are a short drive away.
Just over half an hour from Edinburgh, Barony Castle is not far from the main population centres of the Central Belt but its tranquil Borders setting will feel a very long way away from city hassles.
Previous guests have been very enthusiastic with the hotel staff often receiving special mention for the warmth of their welcome. This is what a recent guest had to say on TripAdvisor:
‘Great for a romantic getaway. The castle is beautiful inside and out. I can’t praise the staff enough, they are friendly and welcoming with excellent hospitality… Our room was on the 2nd floor and was clean, spacious and well equipped with a lovely view of the grounds at the back of the castle. The floor boards are a little creaky but it is an old castle…. it’s part of the charm and didn’t bother us in the slightest!
We had afternoon cream tea after checking in which was lovely, then went for a walk around the grounds which are stunning! We also made use of the pool and sauna!
We booked an evening meal, the staff were very attentive and the meal was delicious. The next day we enjoyed a cooked breakfast. Breakfast is self service buffet that has everything from cereals, toast, fruit salad and traditional cooked Scottish breakfast.
Thank you to all the staff at Barony Castle for making our wee night away so great! We enjoyed every minute and can’t wait to return!’
