From the films of Sophia Loren to the paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci via the slapstick tragic-comedy of Silvio Berlusconi, Italy has done much to make the world that little bit more bella.
Get stuck into today’s Big Deal and you can celebrate what many people would regard as Italy’s greatest contribution to the world stage: fantastic food and delicioso wine.
Fine Italian food
Specialising in great Italian food, Barolo Grill opened earlier this year on Mitchell Street in Glasgow city centre and it has never looked back.
Joanna Blythman gave it a cracking review in the Sunday Herald, Tam Cowan a top mark rating, and it has also been shortlisted for the Newcomer of the Year prize at the Scottish Restaurant Awards.
More importantly, its customers have taken to it like penne pasta to ragu with 5pm customers giving it a solid 4.1/5.
Bottle of Barolo
Today’s deal includes a bottle of silky Barolo DOCG Patrizi Piemonte to share per couple. If you really want, you can swap it for a bottle of white but Barolo is one of Italy’s great wines and this is a great chance to see what everyone raves about.
Three course meal
The Big Deal is for two people to enjoy three courses each from the 5pm gourmet menu. There are five starters; nine main courses and three desserts to choose between so there are plenty of options available.
The selection of starters includes king prawns with smoked pancetta, garlic, chilli, white wine and butter; fresh Burrata cheese from Puglia with sliced plum tomato, fresh basil and extra virgin olive oil and the famous dish of pasta e fagiolo: the traditional Piedmontaise pasta and berlotti bean soup, with fine vegetables, black kale, garlic croutons and shredded Prosciutto.
Among the main courses decide between dishes such as the perfectly seasoned 10oz Scottish sirloin served with hand cut chips and a Barolo red wine jus; the grilled breast of chicken wrapped in speck, with a thyme and roast garlic Marsala sauce or the Arborio risotto rice with large tiger prawns, a hint of lemon, cherry tomatoes, baby leaf spinach and a drop of Avruga caviar.
Desserts include the classic tiramisu; a dark chocolate and hazelnut cheesecake with toasted hazelnut praline or the meringa di fragola: crisp and soft centred vanilla meringue with peppered strawberries and crème Chantilly.
Coffee and cantucci biscuits round off the gourmet experience.
