There has been a lot of excitement recently because parts of the new Bond film, Skyfall, are to be filmed Mid-Argyll.
It’s not the first time that Bond has battled the bad guys in this picturesque corner of Scotland.
The boat chase at the end of From Russia with Love was filmed on Loch Craignish which just happens to be the dramatic location of today’s Big Deal with the historic Galley of Lorne.
It is easy to understand why the producers chose to shoot in the area. It is only a couple of hours from the bustle of Glasgow but the scenery is as tranquil as it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Nestled on the loch side in the picturesque village of Ardfern, the Galley of Lorne started out as a 17th century drovers’ inn.
These days, it is one of the top-rated inns in Argyll with six comfortable and tastefully decorated bedrooms; welcoming bars with roaring log fires and a highly rated restaurant with panoramic views along Loch Craignish and out to Jura and Scarba.
A full Scottish or continental breakfast for two is included in the Big Deal. If you choose to dine at the Galley then you are in for a treat.
Fresh, Scottish ingredients, some grown at the inn, are at the heart of the menus. Think along the lines of oven-roasted partridge or pan-seared scallops from the Firth of Lorne.
A collection of 50 malts and an ever-changing selection of real ales make both bars rather tempting. If the weather is fine the guests can sip a malt, sup a pint or savour a glass of perfectly chilled wine on the sundeck and take in a stunning west coast sunset.
Ideal for exploring the Hebridean islands, nearby castles or just walking along the beach, the Galley of Lorne is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway. For a bit more info on the hotel, visit their website.
It would also make for a very welcome Christmas present.
Previous visitors have loved their stay. The Galley rates 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor and this is what recent guest Daisy 0688 had to say:
‘Stayed for 1 night mid October. Rooms were clean, comfortable with beautiful views. We had dinner in the public bar… Although the bar was busy, both table and bar service were quick and friendly – the food was lovely, especially the puddings. We stayed in the bar for drinks afterwards, enjoying the relaxed informal atmosphere and the log fire. Breakfast was of the same high standard. What stood out for us was the excellent service, staff were friendly and approachable. Thanks for a lovely stay.’
