If the word ‘pottery’ conjures up images of Demi Moore and The Swayze getting down while throwing some clay then you probably need to update your cultural reference points.
These days, all the coolest kids are crafting.
From spoon-carving to brewing your own beer, it’s all about unplugging from the digital world and getting hands-on with your artistic urges.
If deciding how to arrange your sock drawer is your only artistic outlet then today’s Big Deal with Open House Studio in The Craft Pottery is just the spark to fire your imagination.
Contemporary pottery studio
An independent pottery and craft studio on West Campbell Street, The Craft Pottery is a contemporary, pottery studio in Glasgow’s city centre.
Leah Blackburn works in the centre’s Open House Studio. A passionate pottery enthusiast and patient tutor, Leah will guide Big Deal customers in the way of the wheel.
Available from 11am to 7pm on Tuesdays, the offer is for one or two people to have a 90 minute introduction lesson to the pottery wheel.
Open to anyone aged ten and above, this is a hands-on introduction to using a clay pottery wheel.
Guests will learn to throw basic cylinder forms and create your own pots.
Pieces will be ready for collection two to three weeks after class.
Once they have been fired, you can either return to paint your own pieces (£7 extra) or just have them glazed clear to show the natural clay colour.
Relaxed and informal
The lessons are relaxed and informal. The emphasis is on the experience being fun as well as informative.
No-one is going to be rivalling Picasso’s pots after just 90 minutes.
However, you just might discover your new favourite hobby.
Your purchase includes all materials and equipment including use of potter’s apron.
Leah’s Facebook page has lots of testimonials from happy guests who have enjoyed their pottery experiences:
‘A lovely, lovely time in a one to one class on the wheel with the utterly delightful Leah. Great tuition and lots of laughs. What better way to spend some time out of the ordinary! Working with clay on the wheel is something I have wanted to do since forever and am so glad I have finally managed to do it. Working with Leah was just the best introduction: she’s fab!’

Take some time out
Everyone’s life is increasingly busy. This Big Deal with Leah at the Open House Studio is the perfect way to take some time out and get hands-on with the ancient craft of pottery.
Of course, it would also make a very thoughtful gift. Or even an unusual date. Just don’t start playing Unchained Melody. That would be too much.
