Madame de Pompadour, the official (!) mistress to Louis XV, once said ‘Champagne is the only wine that leaves a woman beautiful after drinking it’.
We have no idea if this is true but we are more than happy to conduct in-depth research into Mme. P’s proposal.
Explore the beautifying effects of Champagne and enjoy a fine lunch with today’s Big Deal at the Bistro in Hotel du Vin, St Andrews.
Overlooks West Sands beach
Located on The Scores, the hotel overlooks the famous West Sands beach and is a two minute walk from the R&A Clubhouse and First Tee on the Old Course.
The heart of the hotel is the bistro. Flooded with natural light, the cosy bistro features dark, reclaimed floors, restored fireplaces and beautiful chandeliers – the perfect setting for an indulgent lunch.
Available Monday – Saturday, today’s Big Deal is for two people to enjoy a fantastic three course lunch from the prix fixe menu along with a glass of Champagne to ensure that the chat stays bubbly.
The menu changes regularly but is always inspired by French home-style cooking and offers robust, earthy dishes.
While the dishes are influenced by the culinary traditions of our French friends, they are made with fresh, seasonal, locally sourced and, wherever possible, organic produce.
Treat a friend, indulge a lover
This offer would be a lovely treat for a friend or it could make for a luxurious break in a marathon shopping trip. Of course, it would also make a fitting finish to a round of golf.
Alternatively, you could use it for a lunch date with a loved one. Champagne, lunch and then the afternoon is yours to spend as you please.
The Hotel du Vin, St Andrews opened earlier this year and has not had time to accumulate many reviews.
This is what a Scotsman reviewer had to say of the Bistro earlier this year:
‘There’s a comfortable ambience throughout and the staff are keen to please and advise, particularly when it comes to the extensive wine list… For dinner we had starters of succulent pan roasted scallops with pea purée and pancetta jam, and a perfectly balanced Roquefort, pear and walnut salad, all beautifully presented and full of flavour.’
As we said, we have no idea if Mme. Pompadour’s theory was correct. However we are certain that world always seems a better place after a splendid lunch, especially if Champagne is involved.
Treat yourself to just such a meal with today’s Big Deal at Hotel du Vin, St Andrews.
