Dragon-i

This year we have resolved to eat more great food and we’re starting with today’s Big Deal from Dragon-i.

Based on Hope Street, opposite the Theatre Royal in the city centre, Dragon-i is a family-run Chinese restaurant.
Although that label doesn’t really do it justice.

The menu flies from Sichuan to Singapore and takes in most points in between.

Lunch or dinner

Available at lunch and dinner, Monday to Saturday, the Big Deal is for two people to have a starter and main course from the menu shown below plus a glass of the house red, white or rosé wine.

Starters

Har Mei – prawn cocktail with apple and orange mayonnaise

Choi Guen (v) – crispy pancakes rolled with sautéed vegetables, served with a sweet plum sauce

Gai Yik – salt and chilli chicken wings

Sui Kut (n) – Pork ribs stir fried in a fruity Beijing sauce

Gai Beng – grilled minced chicken with Thai spices, served on a bed of whole meal cous cous

Huk Guen – Stornoway black pudding spring rolls topped with a Thai chilli sauce

Main courses

Malay chow mein (v) – wok fried peanut spicy noodles with peppers, mushrooms beansprouts, onions, kale and broccoli (Add chicken for £1 supplement)

Sichuan Gai – breast of chicken stir fried with mixed vegetables in a fiery chilli bean sauce

Mong Gor Gai (n) – light crispy coated breast of chicken, in batter, in a mango sauce with sautéed onions, coriander and crushed cashew nuts

Katsu Kari – breast of chicken coated in Japanese panko breadcrumbs topped with curry

Beef and blackbean – tender slow-cooked beef with mixed vegetables in a black bean sauce

Hung Jiao – tender slow-cooked beef, with red peppers and onions stir fried in a pepper corn sauce

Sweet and sour tiger prawns – lightly tempura battered tiger prawns, stir fried with peppers onions and pineapple in a sweet and sour sauce

Jhing Yu – steamed sea bass on a bed of pak choi on a ginger spring onion soy sauce (£2.00 supplement)

Meal for two with wine

This deal is perfect if you are going to a Celtic Connections show at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Alternatively, you could use it for a lunch with a friend or as a refuelling stop during a shopping expedition.

We’re planning on buying a handful and enjoying lots of colourful Asian fusion cuisine with friends in the early part of 2018.

Snowmageddon, Jack Frost, coldest winter ever – they all seem rather less nippy when dinner at Dragon-i is pencilled in.
