Government plans for everyone to be stakeholders in the Big Society have met with a mixed response.
The Urban Bar and Brasserie’s plans for us all to become steak holders with today’s Big Deal looks sure to meet a warmer welcome.
Once home to the Bank of England’s Scottish HQ, the Urban Bar and Brasserie is a rather elegant spot on St Vincent Street in Glasgow’s city centre.
With its wood panelling and restored cornicing, it is a smart looking space and the team in the kitchen are pretty sharp too. Urban Bar and Brasserie was awarded two AA Rosettes within months of opening.
Today’s Big Deal is the perfect antidote to staring down the barrel of a Sunday spent watching the Antiques Roadshow.
The deal is for:
Two mature sirloin steaks from Cairnhill Farm served with button mushrooms, pepper gravy and chips
For dessert, there is a choice of Madagascan vanilla crème brulee or toffee ripple ice cream
Two glasses of Tempranillo Grenache are also included.
What’s not to like?
Consistently one of the highest rated restaurants on the 5pm site, the Urban Bar and Brasserie has been reviewed by over 400 customers who have given it an average rating of 4.3/5.
This is what a couple of them had to say recently:
‘What a fantastic meal and a great atmosphere for a Friday afternoon! The food was tasty and the glass of Prosecco was an added bonus! I know now why I always come back to this Restaurant plus recommend it to friends and family.’

Jan Douglas, writing on the 27/05/11, was more succinct: ‘Very good food’ Rating 4.4/5
