Well, we like whisky, and we like chocolate, but which is better? There’s only one way to find out…
Yes (sorry Harry Hill), with a whisky and chocolate tour at Glengoyne Distillery.
Today’s Big Deal offers a fascinating (and flavoursome) tour of Glengoyne Distillery, a beautiful setting for a 90-minute experience offering the chance to match fine single malts with handmade chocolates.
A distinctive distillery
Located in the scenic Blane Valley, just outside of Glasgow, within easy reach of Stirling and Edinburgh, Glengoyne Distillery produces Scotland’s slowest-distilled single malt whisky.
A traditional working whisky producer, Glengoyne has a pretty pagoda roof, waterfall and secret glen, all strengthening its claim to be Scotland’s most beautiful distillery.
Today’s Big Deal is for two people to enjoy a whisky and chocolate tour in Glengoyne Distillery.
The informative and engaging tours trace the development of the spirit, from mash tun and washbacks to the swan-necks of the copper stills before the spirit is sent to the cask. Maturation takes place in a cool stone warehouse, where the influences of the wooden casks and age deepen the whisky’s colour.
The tour culminates in a fascinating taste test as visitors are invited to sample two drams, each matched to two handmade chocolates. Single malt whisky selections are the Glengoyne 15 year old and the 21 year old.
Visitors can discover how the spirit complements and transforms the flavours of the fine chocolates.
Previous visitors to the distillery have been very positive on TripAdvisor. Recent reviews include the following:
‘The tours are informative and there are plenty of opportunities for a wee nip. The chocolate we tried perfectly complemented the flavours!’
‘The important thing to know about this tour is that you do not have to be a Scotch drinker to enjoy it! I learned so much that I might now indulge in a dram or two with my husband.’
Ideal Christmas present
The idyllic setting of the distillery, the expertise and traditional craftsmanship on display, the superb malts and rich chocolate all add up to a brilliant experience for any whisky aficionado or chocolate-lover.
Today’s Big Deal would make a Christmas gift with a difference and will encourage further exploration of the arcane world of Scotland’s national drink.
