Khublai Khan was not just a feared warrior who struck terror into the hearts of everyone from the Sea of Japan to Central Europe.
He didn’t shout about it much but he was also a dab hand in the kitchen.
Get to grips with his culinary legacy by conquering the menu at Khublai Khans Mongolian Barbecue Restaurant on Candleriggs in Glasgow’s Merchant City and on Assembly Street in Edinburgh’s Leith.
With dishes that include kangaroo burgers and llama kebabs, as well as more familiar ingredients, a meal at Khublai Khans is never run of the mill.
Available Monday-Thursday 6-9pm; Friday-Sunday noon-2pm and Sundays 5-9pm, today’s Big Deal is for two people to each have a three course Mongolian feast plus a shot of Mongolian vodka each.
Starters at Khublai Khans run from familiar dishes like the fresh, veggie soup of the day or the chicken and vegetable spring rolls, to more exotic choices such as the kangaroo haggis.
For a main course, diners are invited to visit the barbecue where they can create their own unique stir-fry dish based on ancient Mongol warrior traditions.
Options include a selection of rice or noodles, fresh vegetables and exotic meats. The choice of meats varies but a typical range might include zebra, kangaroo, alpaca, seafood and beef.
After the addition of aromatic herbs, oils and spices, each dish is then cooked to perfection on a giant ‘upturned shield’ hotplate, and returned to the diner at the table.
To finish, each diner may choose a dessert. Popular choices include the salted caramel and chocolate cheesecake; the rich chocolate truffle torte and the lemon grass and ginger crème brulée.
