It is getting to that time of year when people start playing that widespread but unpopular endurance game: How Long Can You Go Before Switching on the Central Heating?
The 5pm Big Deal team can’t do much about energy companies run by Dick Turpin’s pals but we can install some internal central heating thanks to this great deal with Charcoals Indian restaurant on Renfield Street.
The friendly restaurant specialises in Punjabi dishes which have been handed down through the generations.
As the name suggests, the giant charcoal grill is at the heart of many of the house specialities.
Typical starters from the extensive menu include old faves like the onion bhaji and the tandoori chicken drumsticks in a spicy sauce.
More daring starters run from the mango chicken tikka to an Indian take on garlic mushrooms.
Of course, the main courses features familiar faces such as rogan josh, korma and bhoona curries or you could venture into the specials like the chicken tikka jhatpat: chicken cooked with green herbs, black pepper and cheese.
The big Deal is for any two starters from the menu; any two main courses including the tandoori dishes; one rice; one naan bread and spicy onions with poppadoms.
Charcoals is a sizzling hot hit with its customers. It is highly rated on TripAdvisor and Yelp and, of course, on 5pm where it is rated 4/6 from the combined scores of just under a 150 customers who have left reviews.
Scoring the restaurant 4.8/5, this is what Belinda Elliott had to say recently on 5pm:
‘Ali (the boss) was very friendly and attentive, food was excellent.’
Writing at the end of August, George Ruddick came to much the same conclusion:
‘Great meal. Fab service. Excellent value for money!’
