Move over, Finnieston. There is a rumour that the West-West-End (that’s South Maryhill to you) might soon become Glasgow’s hippest dining hub.
The all-star team behind newly launched The Botany Bar & Restaurant certainly think so. Promising ‘a gateway for foodies on Maryhill Locks’, they have opened one of the first casual gourmet restaurants in the area.
And since you’re such a trailblazer, why not be the first of your friends to try it with this Big Deal on a meal for two or four?
Conservatory dining space
Overlooking Ruchill Park and previously The Strathmore, The Botany serves high-end comfort food complemented by seasonal botanical cocktails.
The recent revamp includes a new conservatory-style dining space with big windows looking onto greenery, which means that the name is pretty apt (although it is also a nod to the kitchen team’s vision of delivering a fresh, ingredient-driven menu).
Dishes can best be described as a blend of Scottish and international cuisine with a cheffy edge. With this Big Deal, two or four people can enjoy a two-course meal (starter and main) from the set menu. Lunch and evening dining options are available.
This offer is available from Monday to Friday from 7th January to 28th February 2019. Children are welcome until 9pm.
Revamped restaurant & bar
Moving on from its previous incarnation, The Botany offers a fresh menu, vision and decor.
The 19th century pub now includes the aforementioned glasshouse dining space complete with a cosy wood-burning stove. The bar area is perfect for a chilled drink before or after dinner and includes original brickwork, feature tiling and retro filament bulbs.
The garden and surrounding parkland are so peaceful that you will soon forget that you’re beside bustling Maryhill Road.
Fresh and seasonal menu
With credits that include Gamba and Urban, Chef John Paul Lappin’s vision is to bring a fresh, ingredient-driven menu to the Maryhill dining scene.
Individual dishes can change, but here is a sample two-course set menu:
Sweetcorn fritters with a chilli spice blend, spring onion, sesame and micro basil
Haggis bon bons with puréed carrots and a whisky & peppercorn sauce
Pickled herring with beetroot potato salad, apple slices and micro basil
Monkfish curry with grilled king prawns, mango, fragrant rice and coriander
Puff pastry tart with ratatouille, pesto and red pepper cream
Balmoral pie with roast chicken, haggis and black pudding in puff pastry, served with broccoli and carrots
Desserts aren’t included in this deal, but choices might include the sticky toffee pudding with caramelised bananas and honeycomb ice cream and the peach panna cotta with basil & strawberry jam and crushed meringues.
Trip Advisor reviewers have given The Botany Bar & Restaurant an outstanding overall score of 5/5 so far. Here are some recent reviews, edited for shortness:
‘Nice atmosphere, pretty lights and warm wood burning stove as it got dark. Lovely varied menu with something for everyone, including vegetarians. House wine good, we had red and our friends white. Everyone was happy with their meal. Chicken Balmoral pie a great hit with the boys while us ladies loved the chicken. Lovely for a special occasion…we will be back.’
‘Great atmosphere, lovely refurbishment, very friendly staff. Showed us through the whole menu. The pan fried chicken was fabulous. We will be back soon.’
‘Went with 3 friends for a midweek meal and was very impressed. The service was excellent, food was really good and it carried a really nice atmosphere. I ordered the smoked chicken taco, monkfish curry and was delighted with it, friends had steaks and Balmoral pie and were equally impressed. Would definitely go back and recommend.’
