For the Romans, Bacchus was the god of wine, dancing and good times – a combination which has remained unsurprisingly popular ever since.
Togas are no longer necessary but you can have a fine time with today’s Big Deal on a two course meal at Bacchus bar in Glasgow’s Merchant City.
A popular fixture on Glassford Street, Bacchus is a relaxed, friendly joint with rather eye-catching, contemporary decor.
‘Restaurant food at bar prices’ is the engaging motto at Bacchus and today’s Big Deal is an excellent way to see just what their kitchen can do.
A la carte
The offer is for two people to each enjoy two courses from the a la carte menu at Bacchus. The most difficult part will be deciding whether to have a starter and main course or main course and dessert.
Tempting starters include the house chicken liver pâté; the mussels in white wine and the potato boat which is stuffed with bacon, onion and cheddar.
The main courses have loads of choice. As well as wraps and salads made with southern-fried chicken or wok-fried chicken breast, Bacchus offers a range of pastas and a fantastic selection of burgers.
House favourites include the Thai green curry, fajitas, enchiladas and breaded chicken strips served with fries and dips.
Other popular choices include the crispy, battered haddock; scampi and steak pie.
Aberdeen Angus steak
There is also an 8oz Aberdeen Angus steak on the a la carte. Cooked the way you want it, this is served with chunky chips and a dressed rocket salad. It is charged at a supplement of £5.95.
If you have a sweet tooth then you will love Bacchus. Sticky toffee pudding; hot chocolate fudge cake; carrot and pineapple cake plus a range of ice creams are all available.
Great night out
Available from noon to 8pm, Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday plus noon-4.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, this offer would be brilliant for breaking up a shopping trip; it could also be used as a pre-theatre meal or simply as a great excuse to have a meal out with friends and family.
From TripAdvisor to Bacchus’ own 5pm entry, the Merchant City bar has attracted great reviews. This one from TripAdvisor is short and admirably to the point:
‘Great little bar in the Merchant City. The food in this place is excellent as is the service. Would highly recommend this bar as the food and drink is reasonably priced also.’
