If you go down to the woods today then you are in for a very big surprise.
Not least because the Citz have come up with a cracking new twist on the Hansel and Gretel fairytale in their well reviewed Christmas show.
One family ticket
Today’s Big Deal is a family ticket to see Hansel and Gretel at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. This includes two adult and 2 child tickets.
An original twist on the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale, this new version of Hansel and Gretel combines inventive storytelling with original live music in the intimate Citz theatre.
Need a quick recap of the story?
Living a happy life with their mother and father in the forest, Hansel and Gretel are like any brother and sister. Which is to say that they are cheeky, mischievous and squabble with each other all day.
But their world is turned upside down when a dreadful famine strikes the land and an envious, twisted old witch plots to have their father all to herself.
Abandoned in the forest, Hansel and Gretel must stop their quarrelling and work together to defeat the wicked witch.
If they don’t, they will be eaten for dinner. A consequence which sharpens their concentration remarkably.
Hansel and Gretel has attracted some fab reviews not least from Mark Brown who wrote in The Telegraph that the show is ‘a superb piece of Christmas theatre’.
The Herald reckoned that it was ‘inventively staged and persuasively acted’ while The Scotsman commented that ‘Jennifer Harraghy gives an astonishing performance as the witch, a towering, thrillingly-voiced embodiment of the shape-changing fury, bitterness and spite of the ageing woman unable to attract love’.
