The 5pm Big Deal enjoys a good old lamb rogan josh as much as the next spice fiend.
There are also times when it is good to step off the most well-beaten bhuna boulevards; go off road and explore less familiar Indian culinary territory.
Take a trip to the flavours of southern Indian with today’s Big Deal at the recently relaunched Southern Spice restaurant.
Conveniently located in Sauchiehall Street, the Southern Spice specialises in regional dishes from the South of India.
Authentic Southern Indian
Sweet and sour from the use of tamarind; snappy from black pepper and creamy from coconut, the food at Southern Spice is an exciting alternative to more familiar Punjabi and Bangladeshi dishes.
Tapas meal for two
Today’s Big Deal is for two people to share six tapas from the a la carte menu with each guest receiving a small glass of wine, half pint of lager or soft drink.
There is a £2 supplement on king prawn tapas dishes.
Popular tapas at Southern Spice include the dosa stuffed with spicy chicken keema; the southern Indian garlic chilli chicken and the chapala pulusu, a fish dish from Andhra Pradesh which is flavoured with tamarind juice, coriander, fenugreek, turmeric, ginger-garlic, green chillies and onions garnished with Andhra spices.
There are also dishes like the haggis pakora and lamb bhuna for those who prefer to stick to tried and tested dishes.
Not long after The Southern Spice opened, it was reviewed in the Sunday Herald by Joanna Blythman who wrote that, ‘Southern Spice is no standard curry house… the food is clearly authentic enough to find favour with people who know what the real thing should be like… front of house service at Southern Spice is as charming as the food’
Over on TripAdvisor, recent diners have been just as complimentary:
‘Great southern Indian food. Having watched a recent Rick Stein programme on UK TV, I decided to try out southern Indian food. What a great place to start. Very welcoming, knowledgeable about the food and helpful to make good choices from the menu. Lots of vegetarian dishes and the owner says they are soon going to try out some new ‘street food – veggie only, I think. Very reasonable prices. Look out for this – if it’s as good as the dhosas it will be worth the trip into Glasgow.’
If you want to explore the many different flavours and tastes of India then today’s Big Deal with Southern Spice is your ticket to ride.
