Powerful women – some of them self-labelled ‘bloody difficult’ women – are very much in the news.

So this seems a great time for the much loved Bard in the Botanics theatre company to launch a season with the theme ‘these headstrong women’.

With its themes of morality, mercy and repentance, Measure for Measure – Shakespeare’s explosive and prescient drama – makes its first appearance at Bard in the Botanics for nearly fifteen years.

Adapted and directed by Gordon Barr, this thrilling new version takes place in the Kibble Palace glasshouse with just four actors.

His city overrun by vice and corruption, Duke Vincentio announces that he is to travel abroad on a diplomatic mission and appoints the hardline Angelo in his place.

But in fact, the Duke opts to remain in the city in disguise in order to keep a curious and watchful eye.

When Angelo sentences the sister of a novice nun, Isabella, to death for a sexual indiscretion, she approaches Angelo to plead for her sister’s life.

What follows is a series of shocking revelations, blackmail, sexual scandal and political intrigue.
