George Orwell described his perfect pub in his essay The Moon Under Water.
Were he to rewrite it today, it might need some updating. For example, there is not much call for liver sausage sandwiches around these parts.
Anyway, we think he would find much to like about The Strathmore on Maryhill Road.
Fresh as a daisy
The original bar may date back to the 1870s but, following a major refurb a couple of years back, it now looks as fresh as a daisy.
As well as a complete and stylish modernisation of the interior, an airy glass extension and a sunny terrace have been added – ideal for the summer months.
Check it out with today’s Big Deal on a main course for two with a drink each.
Available seven days a week, the offer is for two people to each have a main course from The Strathmore menu along with a glass of house, red, white or rosé wine or a bottle of Sol or Heineken.
Modern pub grub favourites
The Strathmore’s bar menu is packed with popular, contemporary options. The offer is for any burger, pizza, salad or option from the main course section of the menu.
The latter includes battered fish ‘n’ chips, chilli beef, king prawn noodle stir fry and the ever popular curry of the week.
We could go for the chicken Caesar chicken or the sweet potato, goat cheese, balsamic onion and olives option from the salad section.
There are five burgers – all served in a brioche bun with skinny fries and the bar’s own Strathy burger sauce. We want The Strathy: topped with garlic butter, caramelized onions, smoked bacon and cheese.
The four pizza on offer include BBQ chicken, red onion and sweet corn plus a wild mushroom with roast veg and egg.
There is a supplement of £5 payable for the sirloin steak dish and £3 for the Big Cheese burger.
Judging by their 5pm Dining reviews, The Strathmore has made many people happy:

‘Really loved this restaurant! Gorgeous sun room, beautiful decorated and very comfortable. Waiters couldn’t have been nicer… Devoured every one of my three courses… we decided to finish our teas and cocktails in the sun terrace. Again cosy and comfortable! Cannot wait to come back and bring our dog next time.’
Chill in The Strathmore
Glasgow Botanic Gardens is among the attractions near The Strathmore so you could incorporate a stroll around the gardens into your visit.
Us? We would just drift along for an enjoyable lunch with a friend before retiring to the sun terrace for the afternoon.
The Strathmore is licensed for children until 9pm so you could also meet up with chums safe in the knowledge that the wee ones were welcome.
