We love a style bar as much as the next city dweller but there are times when only a real, solid, proper bar will hit the spot.
Step forward Blackfriars in the Merchant City.
Twice CAMRA’s Glasgow Pub Of The Year, Blackfriars has been making people happy since 1995.
The food is fantastic. The beers are brilliant. And there is more.
The basement venue also hosts regular comedy shows and club nights with DJs and bands playing the hippest music from the 1950’s onwards.
Belly up to the bar and enjoy the Blackfriars experience with today’s Big Deal on a two course meal and a beer.
Available Sunday to Thursday, it is a simple deal.
The offer is for one person to have a starter and main course from Blackfriars’ Big Deal menu. The offer also includes a pint of Moretti or, if you prefer, a glass of house wine or a draught soft drink.
Good, honest bar food
Top notch bar food from Britain and further beyond are the mainstay of the food offer. The Big Deal menu is as follows:
Soup of the day served with crusty bread and butter
Cheese nachos – tortilla chips topped with cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and jalapeños
Cider steamed mussels – fresh steamed mussels in an apple cider sauce served with crusty bread
Chicken Balmoral – chicken stuffed with haggis and wrapped in bacon served with mashed potato and a cream peppercorn sauce (please allow 25 minute roasting time)
Steak & ale pie – tender chunks of steak meat infused with rich real ales, served with peas and either mash or hand-cut chips
Mac and cheese – macaroni pasta with a mature cheddar sauce, served with garlic bread (add bacon to your macaroni for £1 or haggis or Brie for £1.50)
The Ring Leader beef burger topped with onion rings, bacon, cheese and BBQ sauce
The Scotsman beef burger topped with Scottish haggis, whisky sauce and cheese
There is nothing complicated about Blackfriars. They just do it right. As this review from their 5pm page show:
‘Excellent. Lovely pub restaurant. Food delicious, staff very friendly and professional. Cosy atmosphere. A little gem.’ Rating 5/5
Merchant City night out
To be honest, we would use this Big Deal for dinner and then settle in for the night – especially if there was a gig on downstairs.
You could also use it to escape the office for lunch; a shopping trip break or a bite to eat before catching a show at the Old Fruitmarket, City Halls or Barrowland Ballroom.
They are all within easy walking distance.
