Six years before he had a world-wide smash with the film Slumdog, director Danny Boyle had a smaller but still significant hit with the zombie thriller 28 Days Later.
In order to make the zombie chase scenes frighteningly realistic Boyle would instal a camera crew on the back of a pick-up along with open containers of piping hot lamb rogan josh, king prawn korma and, that well-known fave zombie snack, chicken tikka masala.
The pick-up would then drive down Sauchiehall Street at 1am on a Friday night and film the curry-crazed crowds chasing the smell of the Indian food.
Oh, alright. That didn’t happen.
It could though.
Today’s Big Deal with Slumdog Bar and Kitchen is certainly enough to drive curry lovers crazy.
Opened in 2009, Sauchiehall Street’s Slumdog is a spicy blend of familiar Indian dishes; exotic Indian street foods and stunning Indian wood panelling imported from Rajasthan.
The result is a good looking restaurant that will have customers singing ‘Jai ho’ even before they try the specially brewed Slumdog lager.
Not so sure anyone will manage the Bollywood dancing with a bellyful of chicken tikka but you never know.
Typical dishes on the Slumdog menu include starters such as the hot chicken wings in ginger; haggis pakora and trad street food such as the Bombay bhel puri: puffed rice filled with lentils, potatoes and tamarind sauce.
Popular main courses include the South Indian garlic chilli chicken, the lamb on the bone in a rich sauce and the aptly named kick ass chicken kebab.
If you like fish then the tandoori salmon sells well and veggies are well looked after with dishes such as the paneer saag: cottage cheese and spinach cooked in a rich sauce of garlic, onions and ginger.
Previous customers have had lots of good things to say:
