Entry is via a flight of stairs to a fairy light-festooned balcony where double doors with striking stained glass lead you into the incredible bedroom.

The bedroom has a king-sized bed made of elm and specially designed furniture, all handmade with total comfort in mind.

Climbing up what appears to be the inside of a hollow tree, guests emerge into an octagonal bathroom with walls painted twilight blue and a frieze of fairies who flit among trees overhanging pools of water.

In the centre sits a huge slipper bath under a chandelier of leaves and flowers. There are three balconies all with amazing views of the surrounding countryside and one even has a swing.

It is quite simply magical.

Romantic setting

In a quiet glade of pines, rowans and elderberries, The Treehouse is about 500 metres from the castle. It is perfectly secluded but conveniently close.

The castle is by Letham on the main road between Edinburgh and Dundee. Sitting pretty in seventeen acres of woodland, the castle’s origins go all the way back to the 14th century.

The Treehouse was built rather more recently and has all the mod cons and comforts that 21st century guests expect.
