Imagine the best treehouse ever.
And then prepare to be astounded when you first catch a glimpse of the fairytale Treehouse at Fernie Castle in Fife.
Perched in six lofty sycamores, the copper roof tiles of The Treehouse appear to grow out of the trees.
Entry is via a flight of stairs to a fairy light-festooned balcony where double doors with striking stained glass lead you into the incredible bedroom.
The bedroom has a king-sized bed made of elm and specially designed furniture, all handmade with total comfort in mind.
Climbing up what appears to be the inside of a hollow tree, guests emerge into an octagonal bathroom with walls painted twilight blue and a frieze of fairies who flit among trees overhanging pools of water.
In the centre sits a huge slipper bath under a chandelier of leaves and flowers. There are three balconies all with amazing views of the surrounding countryside and one even has a swing.
It is quite simply magical.
In a quiet glade of pines, rowans and elderberries, The Treehouse is about 500 metres from the castle. It is perfectly secluded but conveniently close.
The castle is by Letham on the main road between Edinburgh and Dundee. Sitting pretty in seventeen acres of woodland, the castle’s origins go all the way back to the 14th century.
The Treehouse was built rather more recently and has all the mod cons and comforts that 21st century guests expect.
If you want a romantic getaway, this is it.

Dine in style
Whether you have dinner in The Turret Bistro or the Georgian Splendour of the Auld Alliance Room, you are in for a gastronomic treat.
The table d’hôte menu changes regularly but typical starters might be the smoked Scottish salmon or the haggis bonbon wrapped in filo pastry and served with a whisky mayonnaise.
Popular main courses include the breast of chicken with an onion and mustard cream sauce and the grilled lamb chops in a minted gravy.
After dinner, many guests like to drop by The Keep Bar. Dating back to 1530, it has a large range of malt whisky and many other drinks.
The Treehouse at Fernie Castle has many admirers on TripAdvisor. Edited for length this is what a couple of guests thought of their experiences:
‘My partner and I spent a night in the Treehouse for my partner’s birthday, and it was just magical! Beautiful setting, and a breathtaking, unique venue inside and out. The Treehouse is warm and… although just a short distance from the Castle, it really did feel like our own wee world. Every aspect of the Treehouse itself is amazing – the beautiful artistry, huge, comfortable bed, stunning bathroom… Dinner in the Castle was lovely, the wee bar breathtaking, and staff attentive and polite… Our stay in the Treehouse was fantastic. Nothing short of spectacular and I can’t wait to do it all again sometime soon!’
‘We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Treehouse which is like being inside a fairytale… The evening meal was exceptionally good in lovely surroundings. The three staff we engaged with were all very friendly and welcoming. All in all a really lovely and relaxing stay – based on our experience we would definitely return and recommend.’
