While you are counting down the days until Christmas, you need a very special event to look forward to.
We’re thinking a Gothic cathedral, flickering candelight and soaring strings.
Today’s Big Deal offers a night of spine-tingling classical music performed by a renowned ensemble in the setting of St Giles Cathedral on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
With a choice of four performances, you’d be hard pushed to find a more elegant festive season experience.
Critically acclaimed ensemble
London Concertante is one of the finest chamber music ensembles in the country. With critical acclaim, a stunning selection of recordings and tours throughout the UK, Europe and USA, they are right at the forefront of classical music in Britain.
Yet they keep things light and accessible by peppering their performances with jokes. Their aim is to put a smile on the faces of those both new to classical music and those who know the scores off by heart.
If you don’t consider yourself ‘in the know’ about Mozart, Beethoven or Bach, fear not, this is the orchestra for you — half of the audience at London Concertante events are first time classical concert goers.
Choice of four events
Today’s Big Deal offers you the chance to watch one of four candlelit performances by London Concertante in the atmospheric St Giles Cathedral on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
The first performance is Bach – Violin Concertos by Candlelight taking place on Saturday 10th November.
Focusing on exploring the relationship between the oboe violin through the music of Bach, the performance includes Mozart’s Divertimento in F, Albinoni’s Oboe Concerto in D minor, Bach’s Concerto for Violin & Oboe in C minor, Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in F and Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major.
Then there will be a series of three atmospheric Christmas concerts that are sure to get you in the mood for mulled wine, mince pies and glittering baubles.
Christmas Baroque by Candlelight will take place on Friday 7th December. This will include the suitably festive ‘Christmas Concerto’ by Corelli, as well as accompanying pieces by Mozart, Handel and Bach. For the finale, a selection of seasonal movements from Vivaldi’s Winter segment of The Four Seasons will conjure up images of frosty nights and warm fires.
Next, two Viennese Christmas by Candlelight concerts will take place on on Friday 14th and 21st December.
These evenings will be packed with festive family favourites. This will include highlights from Tchaikovsky’s ballet, The Nutcracker (including the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy), Brahms’s regal Hungarian Dances, Schubert’s virtuosic Rondo for Violin and Strauss’s Die Fledermaus Overture and Blue Danube Waltz.
This Big Deal is a chance to see these brilliant classical pieces performed by an ensemble who are applauded by critics.
Some of the reviews of London Concertante by classical music critics (edited for length) include:
‘First class musicians… the muscle in each individual’s playing gave such a punch… extraordinary’ – Sunday Express
‘Thoroughly impressive, with what can only be described as consummate artistry. The players to show off their individual virtuosity as well as the warmth and sensitivity of their ensemble playing’ – Halifax Courier
