What’s Included

Sunday night stay in superior room

Bottle of house wine

French-influenced menu uses fantastic local produce

Great Edinburgh Old Town location

What was Charles Dickens going to call his wine guide? Grape Expectations.

OK, so that wasn’t a corker but today’s Big Deal with the sleek Hotel du Vin in Edinburgh’s Old Town is very much a vintage sparkler.

Overnight stay

The Deal is for two people to enjoy an overnight Sunday stay in one of the hotel’s rather comfortable double or twin superior grade rooms.

Included in the deal is your choice of either a three course Sunday lunch or a three course dinner for two, both chosen from the a la carte menu.

The deal also includes a bottle of house wine to share and a delicious cooked breakfast the next morning.

Historical building

Formerly a lunatic asylum (the Bedlam theatre is just next door), Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin now offers a rather more deluxe, not to mention tranquil, environment.

The hotel’s 47 bedrooms are very stylish affairs and come equipped with luxurious handsprung mattresses, fine Egyptian linen, deep baths and powerful drench showers, plasma TVs, DVDs and air conditioning.

Local produce

Head chef Matt Powell is the powerhouse in a kitchen that really gets the most from local suppliers such as Peelham organic farm, Mellis cheeses and D.R. Collin fishmongers.

The French-inspired menu changes on a seasonal basis but typical dishes might be the Isle of Mull soufflé; the traditional haggis, neeps and tatties or the ballotine of hake. The HDV burger deserves special mention as does the grass-fed rib eye steak from Donald Russell.

Great wine cellar

A bottle of house wine is included in the deal but if, over the course of your stay, you decide to try something else then the HDV wine cellar is a thing of great beauty.

Between the cigar bothy in the courtyard, the whisky snug and the wine list, you could make a convincing case for never leaving the hotel. If you do venture out then many of Edinburgh’s top attractions and shops are within easy walking distance.

The bistro is hit with 5pm users. At the time of writing, 80 people have given the bistro a combined score of 4.2/5. This is what a recent diner had to say:

‘Food was divine, all had steak, all cooked perfectly and delicious. Excellent waiter and very pleasant atmosphere.’ Rating 4.8/5
