You can keep your quinoa, freekeh and teff.
The only super seed that really gets our juices jumping is juniper.
Find out how delicious juniper berries get turned into even more delicious gin with today’s Big Deal from 56 North bar in Edinburgh.
Small batch stills
This Big Deal option 1 is for one person to take a gin stills tour and tasting at the award-winning bar.
56 North have been running gin tastings and masterclasses for several years.
Following on from the introduction of their gorgeous in-house stills, this experience is a new way to get behind the scenes of this hugely popular spirit.
Lasting around 60 to 75 minutes, this gin tour will show you how gin is made on the premises at 56 North and, of course, you will be able to sample the fruits of their small batch stills.
You will be welcomed with a G&T made with one of the bar’s Distillers’ Edition Gins. Made exclusively in 56 North’s traditional copper pot gin stills, they are only available in 56 North.
The gin will be paired with a specially selected tonic and garnish which best compliments the gin.
The team will explain how they match the different tonics and garnishes for the best results. Perfect for when you are planning your next G&T night at home.
While you enjoy your G&T, the team will talk you through their botanical store and let you see and try the botanicals.
Next, the tour moves over to the copper pot stills for a unique tasting of several more Distillers’ Edition Gins.
The class is suitable for both gin aficionados and novices.
Afterwards, you can impress your friends with your newfound status as ‘supreme guru of juniper juice’. All hail.
The tour will finish with a tasty gin cocktail.
If the tour doesn’t take your fancy you have two other options, depending which gin and food pairing most floats your boat.
Choose between the Gin Odyssey Masterclass, where samples will be paired with fruits and chocolates, or the Scottish Gin & Cheese Masterclass.
Chocolate or cheese? Chocolate or cheese? Oh, the pain of choosing.
Gin Odyssey Masterclass
With this masterclass, you will get to sample eight different gins with premium mixers. These will be paired with fruits, food and chocolates, meaning you will gain a robust (if somewhat tipsy) understanding of different styles of gin.
The class is suitable for both gin aficionados and novices, and you will learn a little bit about the drink’s dark and debauched history too. The session will run from 90 to 120 minutes.
Scottish Gin and Cheese Masterclass
Artisan gin is, of course, exploding in Scotland and with this masterclass will take you on a fun jaunt around the Scottish gin map. You will be given an overview of how gin is made and get to try out eight samples complemented with premium mixers.
Drinks will also be paired with a stunning cheese board for the group to share. The session will run from 90 to 120 minutes.
56 North was Scotland’s first ever gin bar and the 2017 winner of the Scottish Gin Awards – Gin Bar of the Year. In other words, they know their stuff.
Inside you will find a stylish cocktail bar space in which to nose, taste, compare and contrast different gins.
The bar actually stocks over eighty bottles of gin from all over the world and this experience will help you get to grips with the hugely popular spirit.
Happy gin tipplers
