Is there any better way of wishing someone a Happy Birthday than scaring the living daylights out of them?
If you are looking for an alternative gift, today’s Big Deal on a choice of guided walks from Edinburgh’s Auld Reekie Tours will make the hairs on the back of your neck prickle.
Formed in 1995, Auld Reekie Tours have been scaring visitors to the capital for more than two decades.
The spooks and spirits which the tours disturb have been around much longer. The tours take place in a network of haunted vaults which date back to the 1700s.
The scene of much paranormal activity, they have featured on shows such as Most Haunted Live, Scariest Places on Earth and Most Haunted.
Guests have frequently reported that their torches and cameras have failed; some have experienced cold spots and others have even fled the vaults terrified.
Purchases are valid to the 30th June 2017. Each purchase is for one person and all the tours depart from outside the Tron Kirk on the High Street.
Choose from the following:
The Underground Tour – Scotland’s Most Haunted Underground Experience
Visit the infamous vaults hidden under the South Bridge in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Hear tales of how the poor and unfortunate lived in these former slums. Explore the dimly lit vaults, once the haunt of criminals, body snatchers and witches alike!
You will see a genuine witchcraft temple, recently used by the Source Coven of the Blue Dragon. As you will enter their former temple, you will learn why it was no longer safe for them to practise their craft in that vault.
Ghost and Torture Tour – A Dark Unnerving Experience Above and Below Ground
Accompanied by a costumed guide, you will journey into Edinburgh’s grisly past and, as you walk through the old wynds and closes, you will hear tales of the unsavoury characters who once stalked the old town. What happened during the Burning Times? Where are the victims of the great plague buried? They are closer than you think.
This evening tour includes entry to both the underground network of vaults and Auld Reekie’s museum of torture, complete with instruments from German castles dating back to the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century.
Haunted Vaults & Graveyard Tour – Moonlit Gravestones and Haunted Vaults
Your night time tour will take you to Greyfriars Graveyard, home of the famous Greyfriars Bobby, and then on to the infamous and haunted Niddry Street underground vaults.
Probably the scariest place in the world, it has been home to the destitute, prostitutes, criminals, witches and a hellfire club. Please wear stout footwear. This tour is not suitable for under sixteens or those of a nervous disposition. You have been warned!
Haunted Vaults Tour
An in-depth tour of the vaults under the South Bridge in Edinburgh’s Old Town. This spine-tingling tour includes a haunted host of ghost stories that will make your hair stand on end.
It also features a grisly, guided exploration of the torture museum. Don’t blame us if you can’t sleep afterwards.
The Terror Tour – The Ultimate Terrifying Experience
This is strictly an adults only, late night tour. On a short journey through the Old Town’s cobbled streets, you will hear about the infamous characters that once roamed these areas and left behind a legacy of notoriety.
Before entering the network of haunted underground vaults, guests will visit the Torture Exhibition to see the instruments from the Burning Times. Then it is time to enter the vaults; home to a recently used Wiccan Temple; a cursed stone circled vault (as featured on Most Haunted Live) and the legendary Haunted Vault.
Will the poltergeist attack? You have been warned. This tour is for over 18s only.
The Auld Reekie Tours get great reviews on TripAdvisor:
‘Spooky. This was a great ghost walk… the tour guide arrived dead on time! She was great fun and gave loads of information without boring us to death! It is the first ghost walk I have ever done and genuinely felt a bit spooked! Loved it, we only wish we had the time to do a couple of the others too.’
‘Brilliant guide. I have always done ghost tours in Edinburgh when I visit. I have never been with this company though, but I will be again! The guide was so funny and had a great knowledge. The vaults they take you in are so much bigger and better than the previous vaults I have visited. Also, myself and the guide both heard a few things which topped the night off!’
‘Excellent tour… had a great time… our tour guide Esther was fabulous. The tour was scary in parts, however Esther never failed to make us laugh along the way. Her knowledge and passion for the city shone throughout the tour. Will most definitely book again on our next visit. Thank you.’
This Big Deal is a great way to see a part of Edinburgh that most people don’t.
As informative as they are entertaining, this is a quirky way to experience forgotten parts of the city.
It could also make a perfect gift for the horror film fan in your life.
This offer would also be great for a fun date. What better excuse for holding hands than a scary tour of the haunted vaults?
